Let me ask you DM's a question. It might get a bit /pol/y so forgive me. What are humans like in your game? Do you base them off of a certain culture or race of people? Such as in my fantasy games if there is an empire it is Always roman, perhaps modified to fit the times but roman in nature. If i go to spacey or more advanced it because more slavic, and thats mostly because of some of my personal preferences. Also will be dumping my greentexts

The slavic reason is my worlds get more dystopian as tech advances and i love the idea of slavs getting rekt.

My main group of humans are based on Silicon Valley futurists because the game is actually set in dystopian post-apocalyptic America.

That said, I like to have variety in all of my fantasy races. So there are roving bands of barbarian humans based on juggalos, for example.

I'm currently running a short horror game based vaguely on The Conqueror Worm and the King in Yellow. The world outside the playhouse where it takes place isn't really that fleshed out but it's fairly low fantasy and based on renaissance Europe. The PC's are in the totally not-Hanseatic League, the play was written by a not-Venetian and the totally mundane and not evil at all orchestral accompanyment was written by a not-Englishman and is conducted by a totally normal not-Turk.

Point is, the human nations aren't homogeneous but it's more to feed into the lovecraftian trope of 'the other' and slightly racist barbarism than because of good world building.

>an empire it is Always roman
There's more range there than people think, as the roman empire was very different at different points in history. Of course you're probably just going with the pop-culture digestion of what a roman empire is like. Not antagonising, that's how most people understand history and actually playing things historically-accurately isn't going to appeal to many players.

>Do you base them off of a certain culture or race of people?
For naming schemes, definately. Having a solid list of consistent names for NPCs is a must. I then usually pick a couple of traits I want to reinforce about the society, simple cliche stuff. I love going through folklore and history to find interesting tidbits to use for characterisation.

>space
I like to go with political or economic rather than ethnic traits when designing space factions\societies. So you have the cyborgs, the terraformers, the asteroid miners, etc. But I like futures where nations have pretty much broken down into corporations that places less emphasis on physical proximity and cultural concerns.

>humans
I usually do human-only settings, as I hate humans-but-with-gimmick races. If you have a nonhuman race, there's no reason you should imagine them any less in depth and diverse as humans. After accounting for whatever biological difference you have, of course.

>a bit /pol/y
Racism, imperialism and aggression and intolerance in general makes for great settings and characters. Using make-believe as a platform for pushing ones political views is usually not fun though

Actually My roman empire is. Well think if Pompey had won, more agressive but a lot more local autonomy. Way more client kingdoms. Luckily most of my players are actually history buffs like me so thats way nice.

>What are humans like in your game?
Like your average human civilizations generally.
Only in a fantasy or scifi setting.
Very rarely do I play in realistic settings.

>Do you base them off of a certain culture or race of people?
Sometimes they are somewhat obviously flavored by one real world culture or another, but living in a scifi or fantasy world changes how cultures behave and act.
Interacting with other races alone would change culture.
I first figure out what features I require to exist to play the game I want, then I build the setting up organically around it.
I do my best to make everything consistent and make sense, even if the scifi is as scientifically sound as the Core and the fantasy is Harry Potter level handwaving.
Building a culture around the production of unobtainium is more fun for me than just saying, they're Spaniards.

>If there is an empire it is Always roman
If you're going to go monochromatic, Roman is a fine color to choose.
Actually, I do tend to have culture archtypes:
>Evil Empire
>Corrupt noble oligarchy
>Noble but poor kingdom
>Rebellious underground
>Simple farmers
>Skilled crafters
>Pretentious artisans
>Struggling survivors
>Grizzled warriors
>Devoutly religious
>Lazy prosperous
>Brave primitives
>Refined nobility
>Cannibalistic savages
>Nomadic hunters
>Fucking Gypsies

Pic entirely unrelated
