I think it's to get better: grip (climbing, balance on rough terrain etc), feel of the ground and reduced sound from footsteps. Of course, this has a big penalty: Sticks, rocks (sharp, heavy) and other natural hazards are the main problem as they can cause intense pain and infections if they cause open wounds. Other is that feet are surprisingly hard to keep warm, and they easily get numb, reducing the positive effects. Seeing how, if you just put a leetul thought into combat, grappling and wrestling become important aspects very quickly.

With shin and forearm guards, you can already create a very adaptable defense against incomming sharp attacks by curling up, letting your guards take the cut, get into your opponents defense and take him out.
