How do you take advantage of your trade/job/profession during your campaigns?

Do you think that TTRPGs have helped you in your job somehow?

Being a computer engineer made me hate every system's interpretation of hacking.

Working at a hotel makes me portray Inn Keepers as depressed souless husks who all have a seething hatred of humanity while trying to fake a smile and make sarcastic comments about the party when they think the players won't catch on.

So yeah... there's that.
>>

As a hotel security guard this is the truth.
Also we all know you're on drugs and bringing in a prostitute. We just don't care.

The sad part is, the housekeepers have it worse than either of us. To be honest, I'm not sure why they continue to show up to work every day for more than a week. I've heard some horror-stories about the state some people leave the rooms in. Like "shit on the bathroom walls" kind of stuff.
>>
>>43719596
I worked as a male escort.

My world has no prostitutes and sex is something reserved for loving couples.

I'm an architect, I have fun describing places with a lot of details and explaining how they feel while walking inside of them.

Designing dungeons helped me to develop a narrative in an architectural plan, which has been pretty useful while showing project to others.

I was a hospital corpsman with the US Navy.

Injuries tend to be detailed, or I skip over them with as little detail as possible.

Marching injuries though, I'm evil about. Failing to take care of your feet in my games can cost you days.

One of the few legal jobs you can get around here where English fluency is optional. Almost all the housekeepers in my town are either Eastern European or African immigrants.
>>

I've seen some of the crap my friends have done to their feet backpacking. That shit can get bad real fast.

I had a player who was a chemist that kept trying to go full Walter White with every character. Having to explain to him that his illiterate tribal Barbarian couldn't make thermite got old real quick.
>>
>>43719823
I live in a conservative redneck cesspit where like 98% of the population is white. Not alot of immigrants or even minorities around here to fill jobs.

It's got a nice schedule and requires zero experience or education. How many entry level jobs have a 6-2 schedule? It's good for single parents who need to be home when their kids get back from school, and the demand is usually high enough that they'll hire anybody with a pulse and a clean criminal record.
>>
>>43719748
Ah jeez, that's sad, anon

Ex infantry. Play with an ex army engineer. We try our hardest not to metagame the mil shit but usually give uo and give our characters some military knowledge. Played a pair of ex storm troopers on the run in an EotE game. Thumb over barrel on an e11, fucking shit with a little tactical nouce.

I work on boats. I've done fishing work and been deckhand/galley cook for yachties.

Coastal towns, rough fishing people, cooks and rich assholes tend to feature in my campaigns. I also usually cook something decent for game nights.

Doing hand labour that you can also tell stories while your doing makes work easier. Playing pen/paper games with your mates while your at sea can be fun too. Keeps you from gambling away all your pay.

My experience fencing and training as a Locksmith really helped me step up my Rogue game.

I'm a writer and occasional actor. Having plots and characters make narrative sense is very important to me.

As far as it being an advantage: I mostly do voice work and that involves conveying a lot of character without physical reference, so I can usually bring my PCs to life in a way that's enjoyable for other players and myself. Lots of improv has also helped my ability to think on the fly in creative situations (my brother used to say that tabletop gaming combined the worst parts of board games and amateur improv, though he changed his tune after two sessions at the table).

Tabletop RPGs have helped immensely with my work. It's basically sitting around a writer's table, but without the financial pressure or deadlines. Also, the people I game with are the perfect workshop for developing new voices or learning accents.

Sailed around the Pacific so I know about sailing, and ocean voyaging. Also tropical island environments, but that's less common in games.

> but that's less common in games.
Which is a shame. One of my favorite settings ever was the pseudo Pacific islands thing Chrono Cross had going on.

I am a clerk so doing spreadsheets from 9 to 5 does not give any advantage

>Do you think that TTRPGs have helped you in your job somehow?
No

This is pretty much my tabletop wet dream right here

Wow, talk about soulless

Intelligence officer, so spying and political intrigue is easy.

Once we had a suspect, and the GM and I roleplayed out an interview. He got really flustered that I was getting loads out of him, and he brought in some corrupt guards to end the interview ASAP.
>>
Chem-E student

That isn't helpful. My collection of various improvised munitions stuff from /k/ is, though. That ANFO tanker truck was the best assassination method our party ever used.

Locksmiths get into a lot of sword-fights where you live?

>eats, shoots and lockpicks

I work at a nonprofit that addresses a number of issues, all of them kind of depressing to work with.

I tend to create games where evil is clearly defined and can be fucking swordmurdered. It's kinda cathartic.

Get ready for the most detailed monks ever.

I'm a project manager for a theatre construction company. I'd say GMing and project management have a lot in common and require the same mindset, such as analytical/spatial thinking, good organizational and people skills, making sure the whole team functions. The only difference is while you're keeping the ball rolling in both roles, as a GM you're trying to throw the team into disasters while trying to avoid disasters for the team in a management position.

I work as a translator (Swedish/English). Except the general stealing of pens and other office supplies I try to use my general knowledge of languages for world building, writing in universe poems/songs and generally use my job material as a source of inspiration for descriptions and campaigns.
