Welcome to the Lightsaber Thread, your one-stop shop for aesthetics discussions, personality readings, color theory, and arguments about whether normies can handle lightsabers without killing themselves.

Today's question: Why doesn't everyone just fight with a Makashi-Niman mix? It's pretty much the optimum build.

Try channeling your powers /tg/, and tell me what kind of jedi would use this

Lightsabers, beam sabers, power blades, energy blades, whatever.

Why not light spears, shield or all manner of other weapons? Why just swords? Why weaboo lucas, why.

>Why doesn't everyone just fight with a Makashi-Niman mix?
Because Soresu is sexier
>>
>>43689344
You'll often find that, when using a shield, it touches your body either accidentally, by your own will, or by your opponent pushing it back. People using light shields would have a pretty hard time not hurting themselves.

I don't know much about Star Wars lore, but aren't there vibroblades that are made of material that isn't cut by a lightsaber? Can't they make shields out of that?
>>
>>43689344

The surface area of the lightsaber vs an entire shield is pretty different, maybe it's not practical to expend that much energy?

This seems more like a /g/ thread.

For /tg/'s analysis and evaluation.

>>43689431
Can those even stop a lightsaber? They've got an exposed outer rim. Also, with the money you'd need to make a cortosis shield, you could just hire a bunch of Sith or Jensaarai to go after the Jedi you're trying to kill.

>>43689434
Only a few vibroblades are like that.
>>
>>43689292
Your combat style is pretty aggresive and simple. You never admit you can make mistakes. Goddamn paladin who thinks he is the only one who knows howto make things right. It will be honor for me to kill you.
>>
>>43689292
A simple, sturdy, direct design probably meant for someone practicing Shien or Shii Cho primarily. No obvious deficiencies. The student who built this is probably quite thorough and logical for their age, although perhaps still they have something to learn about patience and the nuances of swordsmanship. My guess is they prefer fieldwork to esoteric study. An exceptional first step on the guardian's path.

Which form, or forms, would seem most suitable for this blade and it's wielder?
>>
>>43689179
Why aren't there any sabers made with wood, horn, or bone? Since they are supposed to be hand-crafted and reflect the wielder's personality, I'm surprised that we haven't seen any that incorporated organic materials into their design.
>>
>>43689620
This one seems compatible with pretty much all forms, although the yellow blade implies a preference for swift combat. So, Ataru basically.

probably not the sort of material you want your laser sword made out of when you're a wandering space monk who could be jetpack jumping between spaceships one week and underwater heroicsing the next.

some of them still do it though.
>>
>>43689742
But lightsabers are okay.
>>
never see orange... kind of had like a lance or spear thing in mind that isn't a big exposed pole to be cut, idk. two blades of different lengths means options though. thoughts?
>>
>>43689850
The short handle is going to limit your dexterity even more than the regular double saber does. This seems like an almost purely offensive implement unless you've only got one blade on.
>>
>>43689344
Polearm fighting involves a lot of striking and blocking with the shaft of the polearm. You can't do that with glowy death sticks around because the other dude's glowy death stick would cut your polearm if you tried.

Shields, as mentioned above, come into contact with your body all the damn time. A glowy death shield would kill you dead if you tried to use it.

Really, since the glowy death aspect removes all considerations of penetration and weight, the only real aspects of a weapon are length, hilt size, and number of blades. The strangest thing I'd expect to see would be a sword with an extended hilt and blade.
>>
>>43689666
Aren't Sentinels more about balance between Lightsaber combat and using the Force? Doesn't strike me as an aggressive colour, but I may be wrong.

The reason you rarely ever see them is because the haft needs to be made of a material that can resist lightsaber blades, and those are very rare and expensive. That being said, the lightspear does have a few unique advantages of its own.

Really? Why? I was thinking Grey Jedi or a techy Sith.
>>
>>43690152

>>
>>43689620
This is probably not its wielder's first saber. The design features many marks of experience, as well as a desire to keep one's options open in a fight. The distinctive color could mean that its owner is a sentinel, although I would not be surprised if he was just some far-flung Jedi wanderer who hasn't been to Coruscant in decades.

>>43689850
This design probably comes from someone who was trained by the Jedi, but now walks her own path. She is probably very proficient at attacking, and likes to end fights quickly. Her lack of fear for violence belies a good heart. Though experience of the Galaxy is a great teacher, she will require more formal instruction to reach her highest potential.

>>43690016
The blade of one of the younger Sith. Its design still holds the threat aggression and strength, but it is more down-to-earth than many of its contemporaries. The owner has more likely than not trained himself in the use of the side blades, seemingly out of a desire for practicality rather than naked sadism.

>>43690067
Almost certainly meant for one-handed use, probably by someone with great strength. The striations on the body and switch imply a desire to maintain control, possibly because the user lacks it. He is also likely to be quite gregarious, wearing his heart and his saber openly.

>>43690308
The owner of this saber cares about personal skill above all. No doubt its blade has tasted innocents just as much as it has warriors, for the Sith carrying it will not suffer anyone to get in her way. But, like the rest of that ilk, her heart still holds a tinge of fear, such that she keeps a small barrier between her hand and the saber's blade.
>>
>>43690434

Hard to say, it just looks like something a really big guy would use one-handed and still overpower pretty big guys two-handing their saber.
>>
>>43690152
older than "old republic" they're the counter part to the jedi protosaber which was a crystal wrapped in a special force magic tree bark and connected to a battery pack on your belt. Sith swords were sith magiced up to cut like lightsabers and hand other magic properties that very well could have made them superior. The ability to make them was lost to time however. They were mostly a comics only thing until the sword of sith lord marka ragnos showed up as a major plot device in the jedi knight game series. They're probably not canon any more. The closest thing is the darksabre from the cartoons which is still an energy blade but its thin and flat like a real blade and is black, absorbing light.
>>
>>43690466
That's true. The character I originally made it for is a pretty straightforward kind of guy.

He's a former Sith but never used force lightning or choke, instead preferring to kill people with really powerful force pushes. Just kinda crushing people. He also specialized in force speed and strength enhancement.

>>43690445
Interesting, control is actually something the had a surplus of. At least in relation to other Sith and even some Jedi. He was a really Stoic character, capital S, character.

Now I'm trying to imagine what additional features the lightsaber could have. Maybe different length settings, an underwater mode, as well as some sort of plasma overload that temporarily shatters its containment field?
>>
>>43690568
The only reason normies can't into lightsabers is each one is made with a complex "activation" sequence requiring the use of each button and knob. A trained user knows how to activate their own lightsaber with a mere flex of the hand, anyone else is screwed.

I would never make it past this part of my training. Ever.

Like, holy shit, how do you build a sword handle that represents your personality? I can't design for shit and now you're asking me to make a weapon that shows my soul or some shit? Can't I just take a "one size fits all" saber from the armoury or something?

Presumably, those are the ones those two Jedi tossed to Obi Wan and Anakin during the Geonosis Arena fight.
>>
>>43691499
Or they're ones deceased jedi have offered/donated to the temple, so that a part of them can continue to serve the order posthumously.
>>
>>43691468

I think people are ascribing more meaning to the handles than are actually really there.

In canon, they probably just make a saber that they think looks coolest or most functional.
>>
>>43691488
It looks dumb because of the way the handle is segmented.

Honestly, I don't see what's so dumb about the axe handle.
>>
>>43691468
1. You're supposed to build the parts and find the crystal yourself.

2. They only reflect your personality after the fact. While planning and building, you're just supposed to do what comes naturally.

3. One size fits all is good, but most jedi would want their swords to be specialized in some area or another.
>>
So confused.

well, it's kinda strange and kinda not:
two ways:
you do what you think you have to (let the force guide you in a way). Just pick what you think is right for you. You can do it wrong, it's okay, you just have to try to make something that makes sense to you. DO NOT try and make something to "look cool", unless it's really your kind of personnality.
Other way around, the scholar apprach. Each part has some kind of meaning, and each part can be crucial in the use of one fighting style in particular. You can try to make the best lightsaber ever built or just something you think is right for your status.

AND you still have to remember that it's unlikely that's you'll keep the same saber for your whole life. But since it's pretty much a game here, I'll advise you to have fun

This design was based heavily on your master's Lightsaber, but it showed itself to be a perfect fit for your fighting style. Focusing on speed over power, and adaptively using the force to cover for what little you lack in duelling skill; proving yourself time and again to be a reliable ally to have on ones side in battle. Even if destroyed you'd rebuild a new one in its predecessors image.

As far as lightsabers go, that one could be three-handed. Just look at Luke's or Obi-Wan's sabers. Both pretty much always used two-handed, yet shorter than the one you linked to.

I rather liked the idea of a saber that looked one handed, and perhaps was one handed....and then you turn on the other half while your main saber is pointed away from them. Or to kill someone behind you without turning on the main part. A small surprise.

It's meant to be a touch more elegant as well. Clunky things don't fit well in my little hands.

An honorable warrior. A sith through and through, but ultimately is the kind who just wants a good fight. In a situation where there are many sith, not just two, he would probably be fairly high-ranking, but not at the top. The type who is most likely to disarm a foe (literally) than outright kill them, telling them to come back when they are stronger.

My personal headcanon is that it's a lot harder to use the Force directly on another Jedi (or anything they're directly controlling). Jedi have a protective Force bubble around them that passively prevents that sort of thing or whatever.

Otherwise, why would Palpatine bother throwing senate pods at Yoda? Just lift him up with the Force and pull his limbs from his sockets. If you take it that you can't directly perform that sort of action on another Jedi, the items they're holding become an extension of their body, and thus under that same protection.

I'm not saying it's impossible. Like lots of things, it'd be significantly easier if the target were distracted, tired, or whatever.

You do see Force users occasionally lift one another up in the air or throwing each other backward, but that usually happens near the beginning or the end of the fight (or where there is a significant clear discrepancy in power between the fighters). That implies that when the Jedi has their guard up and isn't exhausted, they're more "grounded" in the Force or something, making it harder to affect them in such a manner.

I like that one. Nice solid blue. Feels like a knightly sort of standard blade.

Well, for one, the extension is a recipe for disaster; there's a reason it isn't seen that often. Ignoring that, I'd go with...straightforward. This thing looks like it was built out of what you could find lying around, but you've made it work damn well. The wielder seems like a troubleshooter, in that he goes out, finds trouble, and shoots it. He's a reliable worker for the Jedi Order and himself, going where he needs to go and doing what needs to be done.
>>
>>43696832
Complex. Built by a young Jedi, they're determined most of all to get out there and DO. To that end, the saber is built with everything it can have on it, to adapt to any situation. Cynical, but secretly, there's that bit of curiosity left in there, and the dream that somehow the world will change for the better for them doing something about it.
>>
>>43696776
A careful personality that takes no challenge lightly, and yet a very confident one that never runs from a fight. Always waits for the enemy's mistakes defensively and counteracts very quickly. Easily manipulable, may fall into traps. Pretty bad at spiritual things, but a good practical spirit and no trouble controling own emotions. Will never fall to the darkside, but doesn't have many idealistic convictions either.

Type of jedi who is a bit "different" in one way or another. Created their own fighting style, with which they don't exactly demonstrate skill, but the wonky style trips up opponents enough to let them win their fights pretty consistently. Is likely sent off to remote corners of the galaxy often on missions, just to get him out, and then returns quickly, proudly stating that the mission was a complete success (much to chagrin of the dispatcher, who assumed they would be there for a long time)

Apparently all crystals are the same now, but the colour they produce is heavily affected by your alignment, personality etc.

It's still the same as before where a Jedi with a Guardians personality (Aggressive, but protective) would pick/be given a blue crystal, now it's chosen automatically.

(Pardon the quality: my budget Lenovo wasn't rendering too well)

Nothing really grabbed me for the most part. I liked the leather options (good for a sturdy grasp) but none had palm swells. I went for the best option for ergonomics. Not too long either. I also really liked the pommel with the ring on it at first as it would make for good belt-hanging, but the little thing flapping around might be distracting. I also wanted a little weight balance. The emitter choices weren't stellar either, I like a good guard to protect my hand, but the Katana options all were far too long. I set most of the options to black, just to contrast with the blade and to be less flashy/reflective. For blade color I like white, full spectrum is nice, but aesthetically I went with the slightest blue tint...
