I know this will sound like bait, but I'd argue that, from an objective standpoint, it makes less sense to say that about 5e than about Pathfinder. Pathfinder has received a lot of bloat over the years, whereas 5e hasn't even been fully-formed for a year yet. It has far fewer ingredients than Pathfinder.

On the other hand, 5e was specifically designed to be modular and setting-agnostic. It's going to be bland with its default settings and options compared to other games that are designed with a specific setting in mind. That's why you expand on those defaults.

It's not even the bloat. It's just that a lot of character options in 3.x (the ones that people actually use, mind you) affect the mechanics without meaningfully impacting fluff. They're usually just "I can use this ability more often" or "I am competent at my party role". The prevalence of re-fluffing compounds the issue by divorcing mechanics and flavor when the two should be working together.

In contrast, the major decisions in 5e (class, archetype, background) tend to result in clear and differentiated character visions. An urchin battlemaster fighter has much different fluff than a noble champion fighter, for example.

OP here, since people asked why I titled OP image the way I did -

It's true that 3.pf is how that image is usually titled.
To me though, while 3.pf is a shitty, poorly balanced, bloated game... it still tastes like something. And if you carve enough pieces of it (adding tier restrictions, for example, and cutting out the core classes and adding the Tome of Battle) you end up with something that has a definite taste. It might still be bad, but it's a bad that has a taste.

I won't start a 4e war but I'm sure that however you feel about the edition, it has a taste and feel to it.

5e was meant to be a 'best of', all the previous editions are meant to inspire it... not to mention hundreds of non-DnD games, and the hundreds of playtesters.
But DnD5e doesn't taste like anything. It's utterly uninspiring to me. For anything that it does, another game does it better.
Its bad, but it's not BAD ENOUGH to bother FIXING. You can have a passion project to fix DnD3.5e, or fix Exalted, or fix WoD. There's nothing to be passionate about in 5e.
I can't even hate it, because that would require me to believe its shitty parts are holding back something to love.

You stupid fucking cunt, the 'natural 20' images are meant to give humorous/emblemic examples of what the results of a "natural 20" would look like in reality. For instance, the Natural 20 stealth example is funny because the mouse is clearly fucking visible, it's just that the cat is looking in all the wrong places, implying that ANY natural 20 on stealth, instead of truly hiding your character, just renders the searchers retarded.

Further, you slack-jawed hee-hawing ass, so willing to bray that only you understand comedy, let me let you in on a secret: IT'S A SUBJECTIVE FUCKING MEDIUM. I've seen audiences brought to tears laughing their ass off at basic repetition. That's it. Literally just repeating the same information in a slightly different way 3-4 times can make people laugh. Because one of the things that gives human minds pleasure is detecting and understanding patterns. So natural 20 filenames ARE comedic, despite not being 'jokes', for reasons clearly too nuanced for you to grasp.

In your defense, they are also among the easiest filenames to make in a mediocre fashion. When used, they should depict something legitimately impressive and/or humorous. A good example would be taking one of the many videos of snakes climbing walls, and labeling it Natural 20 climb, because snakes climbing things is a foreign concept to most people, who assume you require limbs.
