Apply a very thin coat and touch-up afterwards. Alternatively you can apply it only to the recesses and feather the edge with a damp brush, or mix a dark grey or blue-grey wash yourself.

Apart from the freezer, any way to take care of old glue on models?

Just got a warbuggy on ebay and poor fuck has seen some shit.
>>
>>43525535
On metal? Acetone.

On plastic? The freezer or a jeweler's saw and a dremel.
>>
>>43525535
If you got a metal model you can try acetone cause it softens cyanoacrylate.
Thing is it also melts plastic. On the other hand I used it - carefully - on an old Rhino to get rid of some really thick paint and it ended up falling apart on me.
So you could try to use it very carefull on the glue seams and see if you can pull the model apart after a while.

Thing with Orks is that the collateral damage might even end up looking good on the model

So I am going to be starting on my Dark Angels soon and I went to the local GW to get some paints.

After explaining to the employee about wanting a Metalic Purple color (for all the vehicles) he said mixing the Bloodletter Red and Guilliman Blue glazes over an Leadbelcher base coat should give me what I am looking for.

I have never worked with glazes, anything I should know?

Do they mix well?

Will I need to thin them?

For the the Dark Angels themselves I want to paint them as Soul Drinkers (picture) I got:

Naggaroth Night
Skull White
Averland Sunrise
Yriel Yellow
Mourfang Brown
Graveyard Earth

For metallic paints I have:

Leadbelcher (to base the vehicles)
Ironbreaker
Mithril Silver
Hashnut Copper

For Shades I got Nulin Oil and Agrax Eathershade.

Have I covered all my bases? (Besides literally covering my bases)
>>

>How do I put a Dark Angel Interrogator Chaplin on a Warbike?
Use his torso...
>He has this cape that I am gonna have to chop the hell out of. I have a bike from Dark Vengeance that has just the legs.
...and put them on the legs that have the robe. You're done.

In case you want the cape added back there are several bits you could use or just flatten some gs - and after it has been sitting for a while - add it onto your marine in the right way, i.e. flowing in the wind. If necessary you can add some wires in the back to add structural support so it doesn't end up wobbly. You can blend the wires into the cape from the bottom with some gs after the cape is dried.

A glaze is a thinner, more controlled wash. They're acrylics so they mix just fine.

You aren't looking to have your glaze run into all the recesses, you want it to stay where you lay it down so don't slather it all over.

If you have some lahmian medium or 'eavy metal medium or whatever they're calling it nowadays you can mix it with a purple and use that as a glaze instead, it might be easier to avoid puddles with this.
>>
>>43526001

Mixing consistently is hard, you're better off getting vallejo royal purple and artist glaze medium. Sure, you might botch the transparancy from time to time but at least they'll be consistently colored
>>
>>43526001
imo you should try painting the glazes over the various shades of metal to see if the color is strong enough for your liking and if the metal too bright/dark.

I'd also recommend using actual inks (like Windsor and Newton, for writing and art) if you are unsatisfied because they have stronger pigment and are great for tinting things.
I'd also recommend buying an empty bottle where you can save your own mix so the color is the time throughout the entire army. Also write down the paint ratio if you didn't go straight 1:1. You will forget this sooner or later no matter how important it seemed at the time you were doing it... trust me on that one.

Thin your paints

You have a nice gradient going towards the nose of the jetbikes, but you could do some edge highlighting on them.

Is that a gloss medium on the gems or did you paint the white spots? If it's just gloss you could manually add some highlights as well, a couple sharp white spots.

>>43527295
You can try and see whether the washes or thinned purple results in a result you like more, the washes have their uses regardless. Inks aren't too difficult to use, if you can use washes you can use inks no problem. You're going to have to source them outside GW, as they no longer make inks (as far as I know).

Then you need inks or something like Tamiya clear paints.
These spoons have been painted with chrome paint and then painted with (thinned) tamiya clear.
FW also uses Tamiya paints in their painting. The Brass Scorpion for example has been painted metal and then with clear red.

Oh yeah you can't get anywhere near that brilliant of a result with acrylics. Acrylics dry matte, you can try mixing in some gloss varnish if you have some but getting inks or whatever these >>43529983 are is your best bet.

He should've at least sold you the purple wash, because mixing colors inherently results in a duller color.

The spoons in the first picture were painted with chrome paint. Not the ones in the second, which are close to the finish you want.
So imo you should just paint your models with regular acrylic metallics, though a bright shiny tone and then tint them with purple tamiya clear before painting on the details.

You can get all sorts of metal paints, rub n buff kind of stuff, powder pigments etc, but it's not really something i'd recommend doing on an entire army and not even remotely necessary.

Just get a pot of tamiya clear and experiment with that a little until you have a finish you like.

Painting a dude's BloodBowl team. His colors are like the Raiders of some real football team, I dunno. I don't watch.
The scheme is simple enough, progress is going good so far. I have skin for under the armor, need to brighten the fur around the hooves (maybe tint those brown, dunno yet) Minotaur horns need a bit more work, Leather straps are going to be dark cause he wants next to nothing taking away from the black and silver.

I know so many people that have had issues putting together droppods, all due to the fins and doors not aligning.

You want to ignore the GW instructions for that part.

Without putting in the fins close all of the doors on the engine section, their pegs will line up with the divots on the engine. Keeping all of them closed you can one by one start gluing in the fins. If the hose inside doesn't line up only open one of the adjacent doors to correct that then close it again.

Just follow that step all around the model, once you know the glue is dry the doors should open with a little tug and when you close them they'll literally pop into place and won't fall open on their own.
>>
>>43537328
God I hated painting 5 drop pods. So incredibly boring.
>>
>>43537403
Thankfully I don't have 5, only 3. Two I've barely touched because I got them both second and and they are fucked. The guy put the harnesses upside down in one of them. I think he had to hit it with a hammer to get the fins to fit in.

But I got a lot of models from him, for free since he literally threw them away when he got bored with 40k and fantasy. The problem is that most of them aren't worth the work to salvage them.

I've got a ton of lizard men that almost all of the skinks have two right arms because he wanted double spears or he just didn't know/care. I watched him put the arms on a model backwards when he realized he cut off the hands and swapped just the hands.

A little advise: If you are after Bolt Action infantry kits, buying infantry from Warlord is cheaper than buying them from Italeri. The sprues are the same.
If you are after tanks, buying those boxes from Italeri saves you some money compared to Warlord.
German scale model stores for example sell Bolt Action tanks (with Italeri box) for 13-14€ (apparently not knowing where to list them, they often end up among Italeri 1:48 stuff) while german hobby/tabletop stores sell the same tanks (but with Warlord Games box) for 20€.

If you want the same finish, the same colors.
Personally I really like the ceramic schemes in the first Necron codex too. Have a look.

For something superfast, I'd say prime brown add some irregular washes or stipple some other brown shades on and then go back with a sponge and a little metallic paint to get a super easy ancient and battleworn look.

I guess you could make a claim like that. It's not true, but you can say whatever you like.

Toronto for instance. Yonge and Lawrence and Vaughan locations are far from "always packed" and what do you even mean by "better?" Meeplemart has way more tables and a way larger selection of varied terrain. Lots of people there playing a variety of games. Tons of GW and 3rd party models, terrain, tools, paints, etc.

Why do people bother making absolute comments like yours? Canada is huge. You might have heard that mentioned before?

And for these I based them with a metallic silver Krylon ColorMaster Paint + Primer spray paint. Then washes of Asurmen Blue Wash thinned with "matte medium." Don't thin with water. The gold is washes of Gryphonne Sepia (which still need to do more layers and highlighting on).
>>
>>43542718
I love meeplemart for their stock, but unless they've changed things up the tables are in a terrible spot.
>>
>>43542763
>in Canada GW stores are always packed

Good work fool. Not only does your claim not hold true, it doesn't even hold true over 50km let alone over 5000km.

Now, define better? Is having less tables and only 1 companies products better? Better than places that carry the exact same product, yet also multiple other company's products and at a cheaper price than buying directly from GW? Do you see now how stupid your claim is?
>>
>>43542876
What do you mean? In the back of the store with lots of room all around with storage for terrain under them and beside them? What would be better (aka not terrible)? In your living room?

I am just giving an example anyway. Just saying his claim that "every GW" in Canada is always packed and "better" than any LFGS ever is simply wrong. But lets watch him defend it for no reason what so ever while trying to release his angst.

I have done, it does and if you carefully use a rubber (can't remember the name of it, but I have one that's tacky and mouldable that does the trick) you can remove the markings if you're not happy with them without damaging paint already on the model.

How is my post bait?

The glaze didn't do what I wanted at all and I tried to use the method >>43529376 but I don't think that worked as well. I am going to look into the Tamiya Clear to make it seem glossier.

The Naggaroth night is the right shade of purple for my non metallic colors.

How do you know when you need new brushes. My first lot came with the Citadel Paint Station and I have been using the same brushes that have come with it for my last couple non 40k models I painted. I dont know how much they were used before hand.
>>
>>43543756
>How do you know when you need new brushes
When your current ones no longer hold a point and start fraying. Don't throw away your old ones though.
>>
>>43543756
Dude, have you seen my Thousand Sons? That is with a wash (now called Shades) not a glaze. I haven't tried the glazes, but I do have them.

Doing them purple would work just the same as the blue on my Thousand Sons. I was actually considering doing a squad green, another purple, and another red. I recommend basing with the Krylon metallic silver spray paint I mentioned earlier as it gives you a nice smooth surface and is actually brighter than mithril silver and it takes forever to paint them silver by hand. And it just doesn't look as good. It looks dirtier.
>>
>>43543846

A few of them are fraying, during my move I hadn't used them for 3 months and some of the larger tipped ones have hardened.

All I need is one for base coats, detail and fine detail. My glaze, drybrush and wash brushes all seem fine.

Test scheme for my EC legion. I can't decide on which purple to go for.

Left is AP Alien Purple spray -> VMC Royal Purple basecoat -> VMC Blue Violet edge highlight -> thinned GW Druchii Violet wash.
Right is AP Alien Purple spray -> VMC Royal Purple basecoat -> thinned GW Druchii Violet wash -> VMC Royal Purple layer -> VMC Blue Violet edge highlight.

Basically the left scheme is easier and faster but I'm worried it might end up a bit too dark. Opinions?

I will be forging my narrative as Soul Drinkers cavalry. My friend and I split the Dark Vengeance box so I will be playing against Chaos Space Marines a lot ( a Khorne Daemonkin Gorepack actually) and I thought the fluff fit great.

Eventually as they sink more into chaos they will fight along side the Gorepack
>>
>>43543920
Right purple looks better, but green eyes look better.
>>
>>43543905

oh yeah that kind of metal look is great.

Why the fuck did the GW employee tell me to mix a red and blue glaze if there is a purple wash... wtf....

How much would I have to water down my layer to make it washish - ratio wise. I have been using an eye dropped to keep my measurements close
>>
Holy fuck has games workshop gone full snake oil with their painting crap? Separate brushes for washing, glazing, basecoats and layering?

Advertising synthetic bristles as a feature? They're selling pure synthetics or synthetic/sable mixes for the same price as their sable brushes. This is amazing.
>>
>>43544115
I liked the two toning on the headdresses of the first squad you posted. I thought only loyalists had all the paperwork on their models.
>>
>>43544191
They have been like that for a while. I started buying brushes from a local art store and never looked back.
>>
>>43544191
>>43544227

Apparently thats what I need to do all I have is Citadel Brushes (7) and citadel paints (~30).

US wise is there a decent site yall use for brushes and other mini tools. Still considering a drill so I can attempt to magnetize things.
>>
>>43544191
The brushes are just different sizes, there's nothing wrong with giving them names. You don't want a big, wide brush for small layering work or doing edges. They're still definitely shite.
>>
>>43544115
Are you using liquid gold?
>>

>>
>>43544157
Yeah, I'm definitely going with green eyes, I just wanted to try a bunch. Other than those 2, red was meh and yellow looked awful.
>>
Should barbed wire be in loose coils or what ever the opposite of that is called?
>>
>>43544291
Nope, I do the gold very similar to the blue. Base bright silver, and 2-3 washes of Gryphonne Sepia Wash diluted slightly with Lahmian Medium (matte medium). Don't use water. I believe this is only after 1 pass in that picture. Once the washes are complete I wlll edge highlight with straight runefang silver paint.
>>
on the vallejo liquid gold stuff, how do you wash/shade them? with oils instead of acrylics?
>>
>>43544413
Tight coils would be the opposite I assume. Just base it off real life images of barbed wire.
>>
>>43544268
The implication is you would need special brushes for doing different things. Sure, the wash brush has a larger belly and stuff like that, which is completely irrelevant anyway as you can just add more. Selling people multiple different brushes of shit quality because "it's intended for glazing" is just deceptive. And selling synthetic brushes for 4 pounds a piece is a straight up ripoff

The only sensible "special" brush they're selling is the ox hair one for drybrushing, and even that is probably overpriced and you can drybrush with the shitty synthetic you use for mixing paints anyways.

I wonder, why does Duncan uses Agrax more than Nuln Oil? I would expect a black wash to be more effective at making shadows and adding depth than a brown one.

The colours of shadows are important to the overall perception of a paintjob. Dark versions of any colour can add depth and make shadows, so go with something that suits the other colours.

I'm getting my friend into the hobby, or trying at least.
He wants me to play his small khorne CSM army. Should I do it? I feel kinda thorn between being a good friend/getting him interested and not getting anything out of it...
>>
>>43549923

Slap on a basic scheme and do one more fancy with rivets and highlights. If you do a quick khorne red basecoat > metals > nuln oil > lenses, you can knock these out in about 4 hours + 1 for the fancy one to get him motivated about painting
>>
>>43549549
>tesla coil
I'd probably just go to a store that sells a crap ton of electrical components. Then browse through and find some components that you feel will make one. Essentially you just need something that looks like a traditional TC toroid. Our mysterious objectives are represented by just such various bits and pieces and we have a coil used for grav wave generators that is similar to what you desire. Unfortunately they are currently on the island I mentioned further up this thread (didn't think I'd get to reference that again today haha) otherwise I'd quickly grab you a photo.
Or, you can google how to make a real mini tesla coil and make a working one or just use the design and components they suggest to make a superficial one.

I think 3 yeah. Thank you very much. I started the hobby when I was 10 in 1991, but took a long break from it due to life and whatever. These are my first models in a number of years. I really need to pick up the pace, but I am working on 13 models at once, 5 of which are some sort of Sorcerer. It's nice get some feed back on my progress here.
>>
>>43550958
I'm currently working on some skaven clanrats myself after a year or two hiatus. And I think my biggest mistake was trying to paint too many at once. I'm working on 11 in one batch compared to my last batch of 5, everything becomes a bit more tedious and the quality has slipped a bit.

I've always had a soft spot for TS, so it's been nice checking out yours, tempts me to paint my own.
>>
>>43550958
>>43551070

I have, numerous armies, but my main/first/favourite is actually Eldar. Recently I stripped the paint off of a lot of my older models in order to repaint them.

These are the armies I collect:

Eldar (Altansar 10,000+pts)
Harlequins (1500pts)
Grey Knights (2000pts)
Thousand Sons (3000pts)
Daemons of Tzeentch (3000pts)
Blood Angels (2000pts)
Dark Angels (2000pts)
Space Wolves (2000pts)

I want to start Dark Eldar and Eldar Corsair armies as well. I also want to sell my BAs, DAs, SWs and GKs. They are all metal armies.

Yeah, I think I am going to just focus on the Aspiring Sorcerer, Sorcerer Lord and 4 TSs right now. Leave the other 4 TSs and 3 Sorcerers until these are complete.
