No question. My choice is the shrike.

corvids are pretty fucking smart.

certainly smart enough to be useful sidekicks. Just imagine a world where instead of domesticating dogs into wolves we'd bred crows or magpies into animal companions. Like, maybe to chase away other birds to stop them from eating crops.

At airports, tame birds of prey are used to scare away other birds.

One rather unlikely but somewhat plausible-sounding idea would be to train ravens as scouts. They are highly intelligent and have a wide vocal range, and can even imitate human speech, they could potentially be trained to make specific noises for spotting things like humans, horses, bears, deer, etc.

I was watching a "nature does some pretty interesting stuff" program a while ago which featured crows fishing using bread.

People would give the crows bread as treats. The crow would stand on an outcropping from the water and drop in a piece of bread. When a fish came to the surface for the bread, the crow would grab it.

If we can have sentient species now, I think I'd have a water spirit, and just keep a vial of water with me all the time. After all, what's more terrifying than someone offering you a drink which later bursts from your stomach and kills you?

He's a determined lil shit, i'll give him that. In all seriousness though a stoat would be an extremely versatile familiar. Not to mention *FABULOUS*. Those fuckers dance towards prey four times their size before they take it down by biting the back of the neck. Imagine what a dire one could do.
>>
>>43515550
Imagine a ferret that's been fed nothing but cocaine and meth. Now multiply that by about eight. That's what it'd be like trying to own one of those. You'd have to weasel proof everything in your house, and you can forget about having smaller pets or rabbits around since they only eat meat. They also need a metric ton of food despite their size. Cool animals, shitty pets.
>>
>>43515588
Basically.
I've done research on least weasels (I wanted one as a pet), and came to the sad conclusion that it's an absolutely terrible idea unless you're at home 24/7 and don't mind constantly paying attention to the weasel, finding it, finding things it's mutilated, and cleaning up after its escapades.

If you've got a direction to take the thread that veers closer to /tg/'s purposes without derailing the original intent of the thread (Being "Real animals that would make a good/interesting familiar") by all means, steer.

Personally, I'm taking quite a bit of inspiration, not just from the various animals posted, but the incidental information on those animals that crop up in response.

The anon that posted the Shrike, for example, has given me a very interesting idea for a rare, foreign Wyvern species (my Party has been going on about wanting to hunt a Wyvern for a couple weeks, so it's been on my mind) and its peculiar hunting habits in the dense, ancient forests on the border of the country. The mental image of an enormous flying reptile swooping onto a gigantic, ancient briar vine and impaling a goddamn sheep onto one of the great thorns for later consumption is pretty fucking metal if you ask me.

TL;DR: If you want to make the thread less /an/ and more /tg/ go ahead and post something more fantastical. Just remember there are all sorts of ways for the natural world to inspire the supernatural.

Any advice on how I convince my <dm to allow this?

Fuck yeah Leopard Gecko.
Pocket transportable, adorable as hell, relatively easy to train and feed, and total chick magnet. Perfect Bard familiar.
My bro has one that's 24 years old and still going strong.

An entire murder of crows.

No they won't all be my familiar, but the rest of the party won't know that.

They'll have crows watching them at all hours of the day, crows watching them eat, crows watching them shit. Then when they've had enough, I'll ditch them and join another party until I've driven every single adventuring party in the land mad with paranoia.

And then I'll finish my ascension into lichdom in peace.

Just here to say that that picture is incorrect.

Though it is true that the slug absorb chlorophyll from algae into its tissue. But the slug does not have the entire protein repertoire to maintain those chlorophyll indefinitely.

The slug requires algae intake constantly to replace damaged or lost chlorophyll, as well as for nutrients.

Living on the sun along would not give the slug micronutrients required to function. Photosynthesis only creates sugar, after all.

You might think it's not much but even the most socialised chimps and gorillas never approached this level of communication. Alex was apparently some kind of freak of nature though. Rest of his brethren aren't nearly as smart as he was.

Man, I'm with this guy. Mastiffs are wonderful. Loyal to a fault, gentle with kids, able to break bone with a bite or scoop up a baby bird and deliver it to master. Not always the brightest, but man, a wizard with a mastiff would be great.

Oh my god, that's actually ingenious. One or two familiars, exploiting crow social structures. Familiars with leadership that speak their own language to their companions and can explain the benefits of hanging around the wizard until they get it and come along.
