We got our game last night, managed to get it together and play the tutorial + 2 years. SO MUCH FUN. We all loved it.

We have two survivors die in the tutorial, and our first full lion hunt was pretty tough, though we managed to have nobody die, we just all came back severely wounded. Our second lantern year hunt was much easier though, cause we got a couple bone axes, a cat gut bow, and a bone blade from debris. My character even has both Crazed and Immortality now, so she's getting pretty strong if she can maintain insanity income.

I'm assembling the Antelope now, since we wanna hunt that once before we have to deal with the King's Men on year 4. This game is incredible, and even though there's tons of content in the main box, I immediately want to get expansions. 7 enemies is enough, but I need mooooore.

Have people had success magnetizing the player/armor pieces? Before we got the game I was definitely down to do it, but now that I've seen the stuff... I only have some experience magnetizing, and it was WMH models, which are a lot beefier in general. KD:M is more in line with Malifaux in terms of body thickness and such. It'd be so cool to mix and match but I'm worried I can't pull it off.

Painting this shit is intimidating.. I did the lion and the butcher, and I'm not sure which one I want to do next.

You mean the butcher, King's men appear at Ly 06. Just craft 1 or 2 bandages and you might be fine.

You can just let the Men fuck you up and not have a showdown with them if you want. In fact, you REALLY don't want to fight them unless you have 4 daggers and 4 shields because you have a forced showdown with them at Ly 09.

Just finished a session the combat and events are awesome, but man the rulebook is killing the flow. I have taught people to play 40K and Pathfinder and it is night and day between the rulebooks.Its like the poor game is trapped in its own lightless hellscape.

Sometimes I regret not funding it when I had the chance because the artwork was so cheeky. Then again, I moved to another continent on the other side of the planet and wouldn't be able to play it with my friends anyways.

The models alone justify the costs for the preorder, which you can currently get right now while stocks last.

Larger (and truer) scale and higher detail than even Gamesworkshop models.

The game is also pretty great as well. Even just playing it in Roll20 with tokens it's really fun to play. It's a pretty good middleground of boardgame and tabletop RPG. The truely co-op nature of it, and how you actually kinda need to think about your moves against an AI instead of GM is pretty cool. Our group has been doing a spoiler-free run and we're having a blast.

Just ran the prologue with friends for Halloween. 2 questions:

1. Can you attack diagonally?

2. Does the 5-6 player hard mode variant apply to the prologue, or no because you aren't departing from a settlement?

Yes, as long as you're adjacent, but you might not get blind spot bonuses depending on exactly where your survivor is.

1. No, and neither can your enemy unless it specifies it. There are weapons with Reach 2, which lets you attack from one space away or diagonally. (spears, mainly) While I'm not 100% on this, Ranged weapons like bows travel in a non-zigsagging path. Remember, a blind spot requires you to be behind the monster, not hitting the rear of the monster.

2. We treat it like a level 1 lion regards to the life attribute. It's already a pretty easy fight, and two more sources of damage make it die too quickly without buffing it at least some. However, since it's a tutorial mainly, we did not use the stat tokens, just the life attribute.

Just fought against the Tutorial Lion, with one casualty because Dorans head exploded after the lions second roar.
My two females almost died, too, but they managed it and even cut of the lions tail and testicles.
My other male survivor was pretty much useless and got knocked back and down into the wall most of the time.
Selene got Post-Traumatic Stress and was the first one to use language, so I got lucky on that I guess since she had to sit out the next hunt either way.
And Yuria got the Honorable "Dissorder". She also scared herself on the first grave, I fear she will die a soon but epic death.
Got myself a Rawhide Hood and Vest with a Bone Blade, and a Skull Helm. Hope the first Hunt and next Showdown will not fuck me up too much.

Our Settlement fought the Hand last night after resisting his inspection. We have had a lot of bad luck recently and were not willing to take a loss of resources after finally starting to get back on track. We decided not to actually attack him and just weather his attacks until applause came up. One survivor ended up tanking most attacks for the fight, slowly getting ripped apart while another survivor tended to him with bandages until the Hand punched him so hard in the liver his arms flew off and he died. Thankfully at that point we had gotten through most of his AI cards and the three remaining survivors managed to get through his remaining attacks without being hurt too bad, having their broken injuries repaired with applause and two of them getting the stat increase and fighting art.

With us originally expecting everyone to die like in our past two King's Man encounters, it was a surprisingly good outcome.

So, one thing that my group has run into recently is the thing with shields. Now shields are weapons, they are not armor or anything else. Specifically the rules state that you can have as many items on your grid as you want but only get the special rule benefit of each individual weapon once so you can't stack up 2 of the same deadly weapons to get 2 luck and you can't stack up 2 of the same shield to get the overall armor bonus. However there is no care about "shields" themselves as much as only on each individual shield, so you can actually have a person with a leather shield, scrap shield, phoenix shield and beacon shield if you so wanted and based on how the rules are RAW, the armor bonuses from the shields would all stack up. In addition there's nothing stating that you need to use another 1-handed weapon with a shield and so there's nothing stopping your archer or zanbazerker from strapping on 2-3 different shields and surging to block when targeted by a monster attack.

That's right, surge when targeted by the monster attack. Your survivor actions actually have frequent opportunities for you to use them. The turn cycle is monster turn - survivor turn with one surge to be used in that entire round, but you can use survivor actions not just on your turn, but also in many locations on a monster's turn such as when it targets you with an attack, during the flow arrows of the attack AI card and during the reactions that happen from hit location effects.

Of course you can do things like
>dodge the reaction attack
>dash out of range of the monster after it targets you but before it does the action
>surge to block after being the target but before the action is done.

But you can also do things like
>surge to attack the phoenix after it moves up and attacks you with a grand weapon specialist, getting a crit on the attack and knocking the monster down to prevent further actions from zeal (this is also doable with a founding stone and proper cateye)

The Guidepost Halberd here is especially good in interrupting monster effects with monster turn surge because unlike leather which states you move 1 space after your action, the Guidepost Halberd moves 2 spaces after the *attack*. This means that grab from level 2+ lions can be avoided without the use of dash.


tl;dr - The only necessary survivor action to be spent during the survivor turn is encourage. Always look for ways to use survival actions during the monster turn to give it a taste of what it's like to get trapped.

An interesting combo that we also recently have happen in game is the combination of Peerless and Bitter Frenzy. This has been given a whole new meaning by the acquisition of the Steel Shield item.

Bitter frenzy allows the use of 1 survival to frenzy yourself for 1 str, 1 speed and 1d5 insanity. Peerless turns that insanity into survival and Leather Armor prevents the bash knockdown.

Steel Shield essentially gives you infinite dodges a turn, since it allows you to spend an action or a survival to negate a hit with no limit. Counting a surge used for frenzy, you are looking at 2d5-1 average insanity and survival gain a turn which can all be spent on Steel Shield hit negations. All the while you build up str and speed tokens so if the opportunity ever happens you shield slam with the force of an exploding sun.

The best part is? If you have a survivor with Red Fist, you can spend the additional str tokens you get from your double frenzy a turn as survival as well.

Afraid of Doomed? Use rawhide and pre-empt the number of hits you believe you will happen.

So we got the Muramasa and this guy with Last Man standing and 10 insanity... and we've sent him out on multiple solo hunts just to see how he can go. Hanzo II has really vastly outperformed what we expected of him, killing lvl 1 Lion's with ease just by duking it out in a field of tall grass. We even had him fight against the Hand, with a beacon shield, leather armor, monster grease and a trusty dried acathus. Through a hard battle and the cost of his literal manhood, Hanzo prevailed and received a lucky 1 on the roll for respect that saved his life and got him swordsman's promise.

However this was only possible with us houseruling a Katana mastery that had the specialization make the weapon lose frail. For the mastery we were thinking of having Katana's count as swords. Hanzo has already hit it and luckily sired 2 children with proficiency in Katanas to continue the legacy if need be.

Let's say that you have 3 speed total with your bow. You attack 3 times. Bow Spec. allows you to reroll any individual attack roll that missed, but only 1 time per roll AND you can only trigger it once per attack "phase".
For example:

The result for your 3 attack rolls are 1 Hit and 2 Miss. You decide to activate the Bow Specialisation here to reroll the failed rolls:
Hit. -> You don't need to do anything here.
Miss. -> Bow Spec Reroll-> It hit the target this time.
Miss. -> Bow Spec Reroll-> Another Miss -> You can't reroll it again, you only get 1 reroll per roll.

Legendary lugs triggers after your initial attack "ends" and it gives you more rolls according to the successful hits. In my example we managed to hit 2 times, so LL will give you 2 more attack rolls.
First attack roll from LL Hits.
Second attack roll from LL is a Miss. ->You can't use the Bow Spec. here because you already used it during the initial attack rolls.

Both Bow Spec. and Legendary Lugs like all other "once per attack" abilities can trigger only once per a survivor's attack "phase" so you can't use their effects indefinitely. Be smart about their usage.

With a vallejo starter kit at 20$ a few brushes from your local model train store you should be able to get some decent results if you thin properly.

Remember to clean mold lines and prime though. I like using vallejo airbrush primer myself, but I brush it on. Cans are spooky as fuck with the weather conditions where I live, about 50% chance of it coming it out just right or ruining your models.

cape had no detail on one side,
mold lines and flash were a lot more pronounced than the real thing.
There were gaps in random details and the horns were uneven thicknesses.
Surface details are a little on the soft side.

You wouldn't know how many times I have lost the traits into the AI deck rather than starting with them out. Or not being able to find them while the hunt phase is going on.

I ordered some stuff in September and by the time it was like 10/25 I still never received anything, so I sent him an email asking about it. I shit you not, literally two hours later he responded saying my order has now been shipped. The guy's just overwhelmed. Just shoot a friendly reminder and he'll probably get to it.

It looked like this was pretty much a site-wide issue and seeing how many miniatures they have to ship I wouldn't be surprised to see if this takes a week or two.

I've have my shipping combined before. They refunded the difference. This Halloween seemed busier than last year (even had an immediate Encore of some of the disciples), so it'll probably take a bit longer to resolve everyone's issues.

How viable is it to play this with Tabletop Simulator? I don't feel like taking the plunge and spending 300 dollars on a game I never played before.

I kinda agree here. A lot of the parts on these things can be quite brittle so using them around your average gaming group would be ill advised. I know a lot of the miniatures I built and painted for my players have ended up on the floor on multiple occasions or hit by wild dice. It's almost like you have to see most of these miniatures as a tiny collectible statue/figure instead of a game piece.

Of course ultimately they are in fact game pieces designed to be used. I'm sure nobody would really care if you used the pinups in the actual Monster game. Using them anywhere else though depends on your group.

Personally, I'm only buying KD models with the intention of using them in campaigns.

The most conspicuous one I've picked up is the Sci-fi Twilight Knight, but most of them are pretty easy to justify in a typical fantasy setting and I think people're way too worried that they'll look odd because their particular mini has a thong. I've had plenty of good discussions on the cartoon balloon tits of reaper bones stuff.

Though personally I'd avoided the Christmas or Halloween Twilight Knight. The former might look good painted green or brown and done up as some tree spirit though.

I think it only has consequences if your social circle is super uptight about sexuality. My group of friends find it kind of funny that all the women are caked to death. And there are actual living grills in the circle.
