why is anime so large?
I just deleted some fullmetal movies ive had for years and they were almost 20gb together, why is it like that? when regular movies are often less than 2 gbs. is it something to do with the codecs and compressions?

The first torrent has the rather cryptic name:

As far as I can tell it contains three Stand Alone Complex OVA movies (Solid State Society (in both 2D and 3D), Individual Eleven and The Laughing Man) in very high quality multi-language BluRay rips, complete with DVD/BluRay cover scans and soundtracks, plus a WHOLE bunch of extras and bonus material (like on how the movies were launched in Japan, how they designed the cars in the anime with real car blueprints from Nissan, etc. etc.).

I'm not really sure what the "Philosophy Raws" or "VCB-S" part means. But "S.A.C." is obviously "Stand Alone Comples", and "OVA" would translate to something like "straight to video", which is what the Stand Alone Complex movies in this torrent are (not launched for cinema).

In any case: If you're a fan, or just want to expand your GitS reportoire, this is a high quality torrent which I would recommend:

I just watched the original Ghost in the Shell (the torrent in >>776421 ) for the first time in 10-15 years.

I've just got to say two things:

1. It's a great movie
2. Watch it IN JAPANESE, with english subtitles!

This is the first time I saw it with japanese audio, and it's the first time the whole movie really made sense. To be honest, I didn't really understand what was going on the first time I saw it, except that someone was shooting at someone else. And the philosophy part of it just sounded stupid.

A lot is lost in translation, and the dubbed version is dumbed down to the point that it just becomes confusing.

It makes a lot more sense with subtitles instead of dub!

Nice, older aime tend to have a lot more quality loss from encoding. I'm guessing it has to do with all the film grain?

But it might also have a lot to do with codecs and the settings used. Modern codecs are much more advanced than what you would find in the very first rips, and the first rippers didn't know that much about bitrate, and were more concerned about managable downloads. Go back 20 years, and people were actually paying pr. second online, because they were using their phoneline, and speeds were around 7 kBps max on a 56k baud modem (which was the best regular phone modem). Also, harddrives were measured in megabytes, you needed dithering or plugins to display even 256 colours on many computers, the screen was a 14" CRT and the speakers were two tiny little boxes next to your keyboard. With speeds, computers and prices like that, you'd have to be a fanatic to rip a movie to be gigabytes in size, let alone to seed and download it. Napster was 17 years ago, and I remember oping for an IRC channel which was used for file sharing anime in '99, so there are rips from way back then.
