Born in 1929, this Soviet player was hailed as an innovator and genius of defensive technique, and likened to an impenetrable wall. He was arguably on a level above his contemporaries in the early 1960s, and obtained the highest individual award of his sport in 1963. He continued to be a major profile in his sport for several years after that, before he passed away from stomach cancer at a relatively young age.
