Why have the I-formation and the 4-4-2 gone from ubiquitous to relatively rare in their respective forms of football?

Blame Barcelona and Spain for that.

Honest answer for "flat" 4-4-2, because offside rule became more and more laxist with time
So teamblocks went from 3 lines (4 defenders, 4 midfields and 2 attackers) to 4 lines or even 5 lines to occupy space more efficiently.
Now, game is more about players working in pairs or triangles. But you still can see flat 4-4-2 if the defenders are super-disciplined to play offside trap.
I don't know what is "I-formation".

The I form, and the pro style offense as a whole, has started disappearing for a few reasons. 1) The NFL decided that they didn't like it when we only had 20 or so pass plays per game, so they fucked up the rules to make the defense irrelevant. 2) We are in a period of there being basically no good fullbacks in the league- maybe Anthony Sherman and Kyle Juszceceyccyzyzs or however the fuck you spell it. 3) The NFL as a whole has started the move toward defensive lineman that are not the fatasses of yore. Guys that would be playing linebacker in 1995 are 3 techniques today. The big mauler type of offensive lineman (and tight ends) get embarrassed by these players, so they have to be leaner as well.
