Because the NFL wants teams to score more points cause to them more points= more excitement so they handicapped the hell out of defense. Also I think the majority of NFL players today are getting more athletic which teams take advantage of by utilizing ever "fresh leg" they have at the position.

Half back and full back are both running backs. You can hand off to either one; essentially, in this era there are no full backs or half backs they are basically one in the same. Ten to fifteen years ago you would typically see a full back line up in front of the half back for additional blocking. I miss a good running game. I remember in 2003 when Ahman Green had 1,883 rushing yards. I will always remember that number because it's so rare for a Packers RB to even scrape 1000 but old Ahman almost got to the 2K mark and everyone forgets how great he was for like 3 or 4 years

Try 20 years. Parents are more reluctant to let the kids play and CTE reports have only gotten worse. Sport will soon either start getting banned in high schools and colleges, or the NFL end product will be so watered down that the sport outright dies at the top level from lack of sales and views.

The only thing that would probably save this sport is if the NFL went back to offering dudes 100 million dollar contracts on top of a lifetime insurance policy out of college to offset the risks of playing the sport and entice people to take the risk. As it stands it's not really smart for most people to go pro out of college even today unless they are guaranteed top 10 pick level money or they're just fucking desperate and have no other skills besides playing the sport.
