Why did the NFL kill the Running Back?

Running Back's used to be legitimate stars. Look at RB's in the league 10 years ago: LaDanian Tomlinson, Stephen Jackson, Jerome Bettis, Brian Westbrook, Fred Taylor, Priest Holmes, Shaun Alexander, Clinton Portis, Ricky Williams etc.

Who can honestly be considered a star RB today? Outside of Le'Veon Bell and Ezekiel Elliott, there's no one.

What did they mean by this?
>>
Normies don't appreciate defensive games or power running attacks.
>>
>>77986853
They just got replaced by more marketable QBs.
>>
>why are there no RB stars anymore
cause teams don't utilize the run as much as they used to
the Panthers and the Bills are two that come to mind that run a lot but their RBs aren't really stars
>>
Because the NFL wants teams to score more points cause to them more points= more excitement so they handicapped the hell out of defense. Also I think the majority of NFL players today are getting more athletic which teams take advantage of by utilizing ever "fresh leg" they have at the position.

Because money. No one wants to pay RBs a ton of money when they are so prone to injury, especially when they can just pick up rookie RBs in the draft that will preform nearly or just as good.

Having a star QB does a lot more for a team then having a star running back.

True but not for long because both of them are going to want big pay days.
>>
>>77986853

Blame the NFL for making so many rules that benefit the passing offense. Everything's a flag nowadays so QB's would rather throw the ball and move down the field because of a flag instead of just pounding the ball.

1. The 1999 Rams
2. Neutered Defenses
3. No Great Run Blocking O line men
4. Defenses are faster
5. Meme QBs

RB's are still important as fuck though without a strong run game or at least a balanced rushing, passing attack you won't accomplish shit in the league.
>>
>>77986853
I dunno it depends on your market. I really liked Arian Foster, but then again I'm a Texans fan
Bears had a superstar kickoff specialist in Devin Hester, that guy got more applause than the defensive ends or any of the wide receivers
It's just a matter of which teams you're talking about, and the caliber of the player
>>
Why don't they make a rule forcing QB's to stay behind the line of scrimmage if they have the ball?
>>
>>77989722
Did you see the flag. It was a troll post, dipshit
>>
>>77986853
Quarterbacks are more marketable.

>longer careers, so they can build a fanbase
>white, so they're more relatable to fans
>white, so they're less likely to get into legal trouble
>white, so they're more likely to be able to speak in a way that fans can understand
>more likely to make exciting highlight plays (deep throws)
>move the team up the field much more quickly than a running back, leading to more frequent scoring
>>
>>77993936

>>
>>77993936
Are you saying most running backs are black? Tight ends and centers aren't very popular just because they're usually white, tbqh

Centers are fat fucks and TEs don't have the ball every play.
>>
>>77993975
i think most wide outs are black because they need to be fast. lots of tight end are wight cuz they need to be a bit more stockier and durable. speed isn't so much a factor
>>
>>77988803
Also not a star. The guy is hot garbage. 1.6 ypc last year, now injury prone, fumble hands and ancient as can be. Guy should've retired last year.

Running backs became irrelevant when the NO Saints won a Super Bowl with Madden 2000 tier play calling. Unfortunately with the relatively few number of games in a football season compared to other sports, it takes a long while for the tides to change again.

Before the RB comes back, some meme defense will have to be invented to nullify the current passing meta.

More and more black quaterbacks are turning out to be rather good like Cam Newton, Dak Prescott, Jameis Winston etc. The age old stereotype that blacks aren't smart enough to play the role is being shattered.

>The 1999 Rams
Which is odd cause they're RB was their best offensive tool and not using him is why they lost vs New England.
>>
>>77986853
Because running backs wear out too fast and get concussed too often so most teams use multiple backs which makes it too hard for a single one to stand out.

Half back and full back are both running backs. You can hand off to either one; essentially, in this era there are no full backs or half backs they are basically one in the same. Ten to fifteen years ago you would typically see a full back line up in front of the half back for additional blocking. It's been like twenty years since a full back has ran for one thousand yards, but the position used to be a lot more prevalent (i.e. Jim Brown was a full back).
>>
>>77993964
Steve Young was pretty good at running.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFK9HAC998c
>>
I miss a good running game. I remember in 2003 when Ahman Green had 1,883 rushing yards. I will always remember that number because it's so rare for a Packers RB to even scrape 1000 but old Ahman almost got to the 2K mark and everyone forgets how great he was for like 3 or 4 years
>>
>>77989591

This just highlights why theyre dying out. All that shit for 6yds and he took a lot of hits. Focus on QBs and WRs and you'll have more success for a longer period of time.

Theres a reason RBs are usually done by the time they reach 30 but good QBs can go into their 40s
>>
>>77990310

No you cant thanks to the salary cap. You're better off paying for the star QB and just rolling in the draft for a rookie RB and playing that rookie contract.

If you pay for a star RB and QB your defense OL or WR will be shit due to not having enough cap room
>>
>>77993540

>RB's are still important as fuck though without a strong run game or at least a balanced rushing, passing attack you won't accomplish shit in the league.

Lol no. What happens is teams like the Pats spread the defense because of their passing ability which allows even bad RBs to rack up yards which gives the impression of a balanced attack. The good teams do not use running as the foundation

when they made it illegal to play pass defense, it became way too easy for even shit QBs to throw for 3000-4000 yards, majorly devaluing the position of RB and inflating the position of QB in the same motion.

Ironically this also killed parody for the most part, as prior to this, teams without a QB could be legit superbowl teams. Now if you don't have a QB you're fucked. The days Trent Dilfer or Jeff Hostetler (Hostetler beat Joe Montana in San Francisco and Jim Kelly to win that superbowl) can win the superbowl are done.

It will never happen again. You'll need a top 10 QB to even compete for the Superbowl, and any team without one will be frozen out till they get one. Worst mistake the league ever made was to make pass defense illegal. Killed competitive balance completely.

Try 20 years. Parents are more reluctant to let the kids play and CTE reports have only gotten worse. Sport will soon either start getting banned in high schools and colleges, or the NFL end product will be so watered down that the sport outright dies at the top level from lack of sales and views.

The only thing that would probably save this sport is if the NFL went back to offering dudes 100 million dollar contracts on top of a lifetime insurance policy out of college to offset the risks of playing the sport and entice people to take the risk. As it stands it's not really smart for most people to go pro out of college even today unless they are guaranteed top 10 pick level money or they're just fucking desperate and have no other skills besides playing the sport.
