He never ever fights like that, he was aggressive and wanted the knockout, and by doing so he opened himself to getting hit when usually he wouldn't. In that first round Mayweather was literally smiling, probably thinking to himself how ridiculous the fight was.

If he had really wanted to I'm sure he could have given Conor a ton of trouble right from the start and fucked his shit up within two or three rounds. But that would have made everything look like a farce and he didn't want that.

It made sense to pursue the strategy that he did - let Conor have a pop in those early rounds and expend a lot of energy, then build up the pressure to take him out.
