>Perez wanted to be president of Real Madrid
>RM had won two CLs in the past three seasons so the president seemed certain to keep his job
>Perez approached Luis Figo, who played for bitter rivals Barcelona and was arguably the best player in the world at the time, and gave him £1.6m for signing a contract that said he would sign for Real Madrid if Perez got elected (which seemed completely unlikely at the time)
>Perez ran for election and promised to sign Luis Figo if he got elected, otherwise all Real Madrid members would attend their home games for free next season (this would have been funded through a clause in the contract Figo signed that would make him pay £19m if he refused to sign for RM after Perez was elected)
>Perez gets elected
>Figo now has to sign for Real Madrid
>the only way out of this is if the Barca president pays the £19m that would fund RM's free tickets (which he refused to do)
It's like a perfectly crafted story of betrayal with a comically evil villain, it's hard to believe that this actually happened. Could something like this happen in modern football?

But it did.

The only reason Figo ended up in Barcelona is because, while he was still at Sporting, his agent signed contracts with both Parma and Juventus. Figo was banned from signing with any Serie A team for a year, and so Barcelona signed him.
