Furthermore I think handegg is more like chess than divegrass. In handegg the coaches use their pieces (the players) to outmanoeuvre each other. There is also time between each play to think about the next one. In divegrass it's the pieces (the players) who make the major decisions and the coaches provide structure. In terms of chess you could say the players represent the tactical aspect and the coaches represent the positional aspect but overall handegg fits better desu

I don't think there are mere "pawns" in association football, as each player has a wide range of motion and can make the game, even defenders (cf. guise like Boateng, Marcelo, Maldini, etc.)
Handegg is often said to be human chess. I disagree, and here is why:
1. the game is reset after each play, which is not the case in divegrass. In divegrass the game is reset after each goal, so each time you beat the "king"
2. chess is a game of SPACE: controlling the game space and creating spaces, with interwined pieces, and divegrass fits more to this concept. While handegg is an explosive game of gain-ground
3. I don't lower the role of handegg coach, they do a great tactical job, but for each play they can utterly change tactic (way of play). While in divegrass, manager chooses his team for a match, which has the role of applying a certain pre-defined strategy, and can't change easily while in game, just like a chess game

the commonly accepted relative values of chess pieces are:

In a professionnal top flight football team, I don't think there are players that are so bad, or roles that are so insignificant, that they are worth only 1 pt. There are maybe, exceptionnal players or central roles, you could say are worth 9 pts, like a Messi as a playmaker, who could count as a queen
Others are either knights, bishops or rooks. I think you could classify them depending on their role.

Like:
defenders = rooks or bishops
midfielders = bishops or rooks
(personnaly I think midfield is the most crucial role in modern football, while I also think the rook imagery fits defenders better)
forwards = knights, as they must be impredictable and create surprise to score
