How did football survive through the years?
I've tried watching World Cup matches from the seventies but it's horribly underwhelming, eye-gougingly boring and the level of play is appalling.

because to people back then that level of play was as impressive as the current one is for you
in 50 years your grandchildren (yeah right, lol) will probably have the same thoughts as you have now

Dunno about the seventies, but the eighties had some great games. Just watch some classics, they're great imo. Here's an example :

About the level of play, keep in mind that some things were different, heavier balls made trajectories and touches different.

Always funny when pundits like Hansen and Lawro criticize players today. John Stones is 10 times the player of either of them.
I don't tihnk the oldie matchers were boring though. the standard was poor in comparison to today but still entertaining.

It's the most funny game to play. That's why everybody loves to watch it.

so this is the power of the "best" league in the world

Sure but when you read how they write about e.g. the seventies you'd think it was the best period ever in football. Then you go watch these games and it looks horribly underwhelming. Even those greatest players lists tend to be dominated by one or two generations but when you watch the games it doesn't look that great.

I watched some documentaries, especially WC1986, and there are some attractive games, e.g. Belgium v. USSR. Still the standards are sub-par in those games. The defending usually is laughable.
