>The rules of association football were codified in the United Kingdom by the Football Association in 1863, and the name association football was coined to distinguish the game from the other versions of football played at the time, such as rugby football. The word soccer is an abbreviation of association (from assoc.) and first appeared in universities in the 1880s (sometimes using the variant spelling "socker").[1][2][3][4]
>For nearly a hundred years after it was coined, soccer was an uncontroversial alternative to football, often in colloquial and juvenile contexts, but also in formal speech and writing.[6] In the late twentieth century some speakers of British English began to deprecate soccer for reasons that remain unclear. "Soccer" was a term used by the upper class whereas the working and middle class preferred the word "football"; as the upper class lost influence in British society from the late 1970s on, "football" supplanted "soccer" as the accepted word.
So are brits so butthurt at americans for using the term "soccer" because they are all working class scum hooligans with no real finesse and class.

For the generation above me (i.e. Gen X or Baby Boomers) it may well be true that the class reason is why it came to be known as football rather than soccer.
My grandma (WWII generation) does call it soccer rather than football. Maybe that's to do with class (she comes from a middle-class background I guess), or maybe it's because she comes from Wales, where rugby was the most popular sport (areas where rugby is more popular are more likely to refer to football as soccer, I think).
Anyway, for MY generation, the reason we don't say "soccer" is because we see it as an Americanism. And we fucking hate Americans. Well, the working classes, whom are the predominant fans of football, definitely want to have a distinct, British, working-class identity. Not an Americanised identity. So that's why we call it football instead of soccer.
It's funny because we call it football in Spanish but when talking in English we say soccer

you have to engage in willful idiocy to consider it americanism, yet you go out of your way to do so. You're creating something you dislike, and bitching about it being the false reality you've forged yourself.
There's no reason anyone should respect you.

I don't mean to be confrontational, but you make it sound like people in your country have so large a chip on their shoulder about a single country 3000 miles away that they'll actually build an identity around opposing and rejecting said country. Even where I come from (the Netherlands) we certainly have our qualms about Americans, but we aren't obsessive enough to actually treat them as a opposite cultural other against which we define ourselves.

So why are Brits so butthurt at AMERICANS when they say soccer? This makes no sense whatsoever. If you want to be different from americans then you should want them to say soccer. There is literally nothing wrong with the term soccer.
I don't mind non-Brits saying soccer at all.
For years in Hull, because of the influence of Rugby [Football] League they called it "the Association game" or "the other game" and it's just a contraction of that.
Even the main Rugby League team is simply called Hull Football Club still, whilst >we are Hull City Association Football Club.

what's retarded about it? away teams in the first leg would completely refuse to play and take a 0-0 into the home game otherwise.
