Hockey has always been a niche sport, it doesn't have the same broad appeal that basketball, American football, and baseball have. Only a handful of states give a shit about hockey. Not even most white Americans care about hockey. It's probably due to the fact that hockey is expensive as fuck for most people. It's easier for people to relate to the other sports since most Americans played them while growing up.

quit making shit up, there's a third tier minor league specific to the southern states that averages close to 3k per game, second tier east coast league draws 4.5k and AHL draws over 5k per game, including 45,000 for an outdoor game

what may or may not be good for the NHL's bottom line, and the general health of the game of hockey, are entirely separate matters
