ITT we rate different sports managers/coaches depending on their impact on their team

>American football
10/10
The real contenders of an American football game are the head coaches, they are basically playing human chess against each other
>Association football
7/10
Manager is responsible for everything: formation, training, recruits, human ressources, assistants, tactics, anti-tactics, relations between players, etc. Only he isn't on the field and if his players screw up he can't really do anything to win
>Basketball
4/10
Same as association football but way smaller, also a single excellent player can carry alone a basketball team without any special tactics whatsoever
>Hockey
3/10
As scientifically proven by Michael Mauboussin, Hockey is mostly based on luck (most goals are deflected shots on target), and a single stellar player can dominate the other team too
>Baseball
0/10
Since there is no tactics at all in baseball the manager is only here to watch the team and give the batting order.

That doesn't mean the entire sport is based on luck. Hockey players and coaches are more than aware of this. There is a strategy to getting traffic in front of the net, drafting/signing good power forwards that are strong enough to create chaos in front, getting big, strong defensemen who can clear forwards out of that dangerous area, etc.
Whether or not any individual shot goes in is ultimately luck, you can absolutely skew that luck in your favor by generating more shots, generating high quality shots, drawing penalties and getting more powerplay time, killing penalties, etc.
Plus line changes and matchups are a huge part of the game in a way that only American football compares

On the other hand, basketball should be about 1/10. Coaching matters a little, but for teams with an elite player like LeBron James, coaching mostly consists of "lol do what bronbron says"

Pretty good rank/rate. I'd add that baseball is barely even a sport to begin with.

why tho?

good points. Hockey rating raised from 3/10 to 7/10

Team manager controls every offensive play by using signalfan.
He plans defence formations like american sport journalist wrote it; "fielders deploy a range of formations, depending on a hitter’s tendencies. The degree of movement from play to play evokes NFL defensive schemes more than Major League Baseball defensive shifts."

Why even mention baseball if you clearly know nothing about it?

opinion disregarded. baseball has more influence based on coaching than soccer.
>>
>>76419736
I'm with you about baseball having tactics, but this might be an exaggeration. Soccer has so much flexibility with how the players can be arranged, so the coaches have a huge amount of influence.
>>
don't baseball coaches call what pitches are thrown?
>>
>>76419945
catchers do. catchers also position fielders.
most successful baseball managers are retired catchers. they are the only player that sees the whole field & calls each pitch.
the pitcher may "shake off" the catcher's call, however. this is usually a mistake to do.
>>
the market tells you the value.
great college coach: $8M
great NFL coach: $7M to $5M
Great Basketball coach: starts at $3M
Baseball manager: starts at $750K.
Most baseball owners will only pay multiple millions to legendary managers. The General Manager in baseball makes $10 million plus bonuses because they put the roster together, "moneyball" the team, call up minor leaguers, deal with ownership, tec. The baseball team manager's toughest job is pulling tired pitchers.
