The NBA OWNED the Hornets at the time. They vetoed the trade because it was an awful trade for that team, not because they didn't like the Lakers or thought that team would be overpowered.

you're conflating two totally different issues

in the cp3 trade veto, the league actually controlled (owned) the hornets.

the KD free agency was something the league could not stop b/c it was valid w/in the scope of the CBA, which was a negotiated deal between the league and the players.

KD was a free agent, chris paul was a trade

one was a trade by a team that was owned by the NBA, thus the rest of the league owners could vote on the trade. the other was free agency... this is very simple for people with developed human brains.

Yeah that was the exact idea. The hornets were supposed to suck ass and go into tank mode when Paul was traded to LA, because that's basically how rebuilding goes under the new CBA- getting superstars through the draft.
They happened to get the #1 pick in 2012 anyway by (((coincidence))), so in the end it doesn't matter, but Dell demps knew what he was doing as GM, and Stern decided to butt in.
