I don't believe you. I mean I believe you about the popularity in other countries. But it is not popular here. I sure there is someone, somewhere is this country has played cricket. But it is far from popular here.

How would someone here even get into cricket? There are no Pee-Wee leagues. It isn't played in middle or high school.

Only he can save American cricket now
>>
>Archived references to cricket played in America date from 1709. A New York newspaper from 1739 contains an advertisement for cricket players and the first documented competition occurred in 1751 in Manhattan
>Founded in 1854, The Philadelphia Cricket Club is the oldest country club in the United States.
>According to William Byrd II's diary, cricket was played on the slave plantations of Virginia, including on his Westover estate among neighbors and slaves. By 1793, Dartmouth College students were playing cricket on the Green.
>Cricket received a significant amount of media coverage at the time. In the mid-19th century, the sport was played in approximately 125 cities in 22 states. Roughly 500 officially established clubs existed and it is probable that in 1860 there were 10,000 boys and men in America who had actively played the sport for at least a season

>>
>>76169926
No I can because the best teams in the world need to be able to perform in all conditions.

South Africa and Australia are obviously good on their own pitches and England have shown they can play well in South Africa with their current side, while India's batting and bowling falls apart on bouncy meme wickets.
Similarly, South Africa and Australia's bowlers can both use English and New Zealand conditions well and both sides should be good against swing as they stand now. India can't bowl on those pitches though and their batsmen don't know what swing is.

India are just giant fucking homebabbies that statpad their way to the top of the rankings by only leaving India when playing in the West Indies (turning wickets) or Zimbabwe (shit opposition)

what's the possible fairest hybrid sport you could come up with to pit baseball and cricket players against one another

>>
basically I think if mitchell johnson or dennis lillee or dale steyn or wasim akram or malcolm marshall were coming in at full speed on an 80s WACA wicket or shane warne or murali at their peaks were bowling on a day 5 pitch a baseball player would be lucky to hit 1/10 balls cleanly, if that

it's impossible for bowlers to be effective as a baseball pitcher and cricketers never hit a full toss wide of them straight

It's always funny to watch foreigner scum discount the sports we're good at as "not international."

By every conceivable metric baseball and basketball are international sports, both which are bigger globally than rugby, which Aussies, Brits, etc claim as "global" because they happen to be good at it.

Furthermore, I would say that baseball is the premier global bat-and-ball game because countries that are actually good at variety of sports play it and it has been a professional sport far longer than povertypaddle, meaning top athletes would be drawn to it.

>"Sure I could smack the ball alright," he told the press afterwards. "How could I help it when you have a great wide board to swing?" All the same the game, Ruth decided, wasn't for him, just because "they tell me $40 a week is top pay for cricket".

Ruth was probably making about 200 grand a year in 1930s money. Yeah, our best athletes were going to give that up to play some tea drinking Victorian game with the people we kicked out.

He said you have to be born 6'7"+ to be in the sport when that's patently false. For a few positions like center (though the era of the tall center is over) your height is important but there are some positions where height is a disadvantage. If the average is 6'7" there are quite a few players below that height anyway.

Incorrect.

>Batting is so absurdly easy that a player in limited overs cricket can win the game BY HIMSELF or a batter in test cricket can bat for literal hours since it's impossible to miss when you have a boat oar.

A player can win by himself yes that's true. But like any sport that requires skill and concentration. A shit batter never won the game by himself. If a batter won the game by himself it means the rest of his team failed horribly and he managed to stick in there and hold it out. In cricket you keep going until you're out. There's no hard limit like baseball.

Unlike baseball cricket has different dynamics. In baseball most pitches end up being misses or leaves. In baseball the fielding team is the attacking team so that makes sense. In cricket the batting team is the attacking team, it's up to the bowlers and fielders to get the batters out. Cricket bowling has a lot of diversity, and in cricket it's a circle field and they can change the fielders exactly how they like.

>Little League level exit velocities for fielders to contend with, unlike the 120mph batted ball speeds in baseball.

I wouldn't pretend to know unlike you. Pretty sure there's no research on how fast cricket balls come off a bat, but cricket bats are a lot "sweeter", in that they really push the ball off the bat better despite it being heavier and harder. So I doubt it's too different.

>No baserunning required. "Run back and forthlol" the game. And when the ball rolls along and hits a rope, the batter doesn't even have to run. KEK

There's no difference from runing between bases and wickets. At least cricketers will always sprint and dive to keep in (with more pads). Fat baseballers look like they cba most the time. Get people being run out like a step away and they fucking didn't even bother going for more than a jog.

>No tagging out runners. No on the field contact. Fielders aren't required to do much like throw out baserunners from 350 feet away.

It's a bigger field and a smaller running zone. Yes people do have to toss in balls from the boundary at times.

>Cricket players fundamentals are so bad, teams are hiring baseball coaches to teach them basic things like fielding and throwing. KEK.

Doubtful. The white nations always have had solid fielding, it's the asians who struggle with that because they're too obsessed with flashy things like hitting runs and bowling 100mph.
>>
>>76194363
>If the nigger argument

It never had any merit.

Foreigners think soccer, maybe rugby, maybe cricket were "global" sports from day 1, and America "invented" their games because they didn't want to lose to the old world, but that's anything but.

The founding fathers of soccer couldn't even agree on rule set until the 1860s, by which time baseball was already a phenomenon in the US and the beginnings of American football were taking shape.

Many of the sports we know today were very regionalized with rule sets varying from even town to town. There was no such thing as World Cups and the like.

The first real international sporting even that multiple countries actually made ship rides for was the Olympics. And we won the very first one, without "niggers."

Boxing and tennis were bigger global sports in the late 1800s, early 1900s than soccer, and we dominated those games, too.

If anything, the "rest of the world" ran to soccer.

>Incorrect.

I was being reductive just like you were. There are far more than "two strokes" in baseball. They just don't have a variety of cute names, so you think they don't exists.

>I wouldn't pretend to know unlike you. Pretty sure there's no research on how fast cricket balls come off a bat, but cricket bats are a lot "sweeter", in that they really push the ball off the bat better despite it being heavier and harder. So I doubt it's too different.

I know. First of all, it's simple physics. A cricket bat is made of soft willow presswood while a baseball bat is made of hard ash. And the flat surface of the cricket bat makes it less aerodynamic (when they had a baseball player swing a cricket bat, his bat speed was 10% lower) and displaces the energy more. A baseball bat's narrow sweet spot focuses the energy. Think a slap vs. a punch.

Also, if the exit velocities were in anyway similar, we'd see 450-500 foot cricket shots.

Here's a good breakdown:

http://www.thecricketmonthly.com/story/1026113/the-longest-shot

Summary: No cricketer has ever hit a ball further than 430 feet.

The longest verified home runs come in at about 530-550 feet. About a 20-25% difference.

>There's no difference from runing between bases and wickets. At least cricketers will always sprint and dive to keep in (with more pads). Fat baseballers look like they cba most the time. Get people being run out like a step away and they fucking didn't even bother going for more than a jog.

Running around the bases, sliding, evading tags, breaking up double plays, running over/jumping over players is A LOT different than just running back and forth. Furthermore, cricket players don't have to steal bases, tag up, etc. Baserunning demands aren't even close.

And a lot of baseball players go 100% all the time.
>>
The pinnacle of test cricket is viewed as the leave. Every rule in the entire game is geared towards maximizing the amount of leaves that can be attempted within 5 days. Its great viewing. What a thrilling sport.
T20 is OK but I can't deal with all that hitting and running. Sometimes a whole game can pass without a single leave being attempted! Can you imagine?
I hardly ever get to sit and watch for eight minutes while a batsman takes his guard and resets six times, followed by a leave, in T20. If T20 wants to compete they need far more of it.
Also, there's far too much game time in T20. They score too many runs and go far too long without slowing the game down with leaves, forward defences and 4 sightscreen adjustments. What T20 need to do is make leaves and blocks worth more, so more time is defending and watching one guy play all day. Did you guys see the latest Durham vs Worcestershire game? 1.3 runs per over to 1.2! Worcs had no answer to Durham's tactics of leaving every ball that's not on the stumps out then asking the umpire to end play early for bad light.
Its this level of tactical sophistication that is missing in T20, where as you rightly point out, its just a bunch of athletic guys trying to score runs against each other. Yawn

Baseball coach helped you win the Ashes not too long ago.

>During the 2005 Ashes series the Australian teams fielding had slipped and lost the Ashes to England for the first time since 1987.[4] John Buchanan then made the decision for Australia to have a full-time fielding coach and Young became speculated in the media as the first baseball coach to coach a national cricket team and announced he would like to finish his managerial career doing it.[

On the other hand, you'd NEVER see Tendulkar on baseball coaching staff. Cricketers literally have nothing to teach to baseball players.

Fun fact, baseball has been teaching cricket for a century:

>stealing bases

You can do that in cricket technically it's just people never really bother with it because it's too risky. Its common towards the end of games when every run counts and they're desperately trying to claw any run they can.

>sliding

Yes cricket players dive rather than slide in. There's not much of a difference except I guess a dive requires more physical effort?

>running over/jumping

runners in cricket have to dodge too, you're literally just describing things that happen not actual things within the sport

>And a lot of baseball players go 100% all the time.

I've seen plenty of baseball games and no they really don't. They only seem to care on the last base (ie. the 3rd to home). I'd say a majority seme to lazily jog and accept they won't make it even though they're only a few steps short and doing a sprint and putting pressure on might've done a cheeky fumble and got them in.

>pros don't fumble

It's not about that it's about the chance. It's statistics. If it happens like 3% of the time it's worth it. Because +3% success rate is more than doing nothing. Professional sport should take all advantages they can. It feels like in baseball they really just don't bother squeezing out that extra efficiency.

>cricket players run

Not around the bases. Running in a straight line is easier than running and turning.

>Yes cricket players dive rather than slide in. There's not much of a difference except I guess a dive requires more physical effort?

Lol. Like there is any exertion difference between sliding and diving. And baseball players "dive" plenty. We just use sliding as a catchall term.

>runners in cricket have to dodge too, you're literally just describing things that happen not actual things within the sport

Show me a cricketer dodging a tag or running over/jumping over the wicket keeper? I've watched a fair amount of cricket, and I've never seen a baserunning scenario where a cricket baserunner has to dodge an opposing player.

I agree some players are lazy in this instance (they shouldn't be, and it's up to the coaches to get in their ass), but it's really not the norm.

But that doesn't have anything to do with the sport. It's like saying soccer sucks because they dive for penalties.

So you're basically just wrong.
>>
>>76195267
>>76195315
I should expand that it doesn't really happen in cricket because runners aren't forced to run in certain situations unlike baseball. And run outs tend to only happen with confusion, since both batsmen need to agree to run as you can't score with only 1 batter running. Usually happens when 1 batter wants to run and goes and the other panics and doesn't go, ends up getting the other out.
>>
>>76195258

Running the bases is actually difficult.

Sure.

>What's impressive about it.

The two players had to coordinate in that exact manner or the runner at first would've been safe. And keep in mind that throw was spot on from 90 feet. A routine action for a pro sure, but I think cricketers are required to throw at full power from over 90 feet maybe once in a life-time :^)

I did actually think there was a rule like that but I remembered in my mind a game when 2 were run out in one go. But now I remember it was actually that they let the shitter (1st one to be thrown to) batter live and tossed it to the other end and got the better batter out since they were both dead in the water.

Soccer, tennis, and hopefully basketball (fell in love with the sport here) should be Australia's focus. Plebgue is okay, but also kind of memey. Better than Yawnion at least.

You're cheeky meter is malfunctioning, friend.

I know cricketers sometimes have to gun throws, but not anywhere near the frequency as baseball players.

Truth be told, the two sports are too different from each other to be compared. Only common ground really is throwing from the field, which can be transferable (i.e. a baseball player and a cricket player in the field should have the same mechanics).

But that's like saying Am. Football and baseball are similar because a QB throws kind of like a pitcher.

The rest of each sport's nuances are too dramatically different. When I watch cricket, I see it more like billiards on a huge field (not an insult, btw).

>>
>>76195734

Yeah, Not even close.

That ball would've hit the rope for a 4.

From batting crease to boundary, cricket fields are little league size, about 250-300 feet depending on the grounds.

It's funny to watch cricket fans "ooh and ahh" when one of their Paki heroes hits the ball 250 feet for a six.
>>
>>76195781

You ain't throwing with that kind of accuracy from 250 feet away at over 90mph.

And no cricketer sure as shit can't, which is why they hire baseball coaches to teach them how to throw.
>>
>>76195793
Of all the comparisons to make, that's probably the most retarded. Cricketballs and baseballs aren't made of the same material. The strongest cricket batsman could probably crush a ball the same as a major leaguer.

I wonder if there's any cricket pitch that's known for deep balls because of altitude, like Colorado's

He's easily throwing that ball over 90mph.

Of course the "pace" is going to be slowed because the ball is traveling nearly the distance of a football field.

Show me a Paki (i.e. cricket player) running out a batter with a throw from the 4 boundary traveling at 90mph or over?

You probably can't.

>>

>The strongest cricket batsman could probably crush a ball the same as a major leaguer.

Cricket balls and baseballs are nearly the same weight, with only about half an ounce separating them.

That said, I have no idea which ball is built to travel further.

I agree the strongest batsmen would probably be able to hit balls over 450 feet, but they have to completely rework their swing. Graham Gooch (a great cricket batsman) in his prime took on a 60 year old Ernie Banks in a HR derby. He lost 3-0, popping everything up.

Cricketers natural swing uses to much high elbow to be effective for pure power hitting.

>Whether he makes it or not, we'll have to wait and watch. One thing is for sure though, Powell will not be joining the New York Yankees: a Yankees scout had a look at Powell in Florida this week, and was rather unimpressed.

Proven not to make a difference in distance.

The sweet spot is around 86mph. A baseball player has more time to load his hands and swing hard vs. a 100mph fastball.

>>

>but they have to completely rework their swing
No shit Sherlock. Might as well talk about how Federer would do alright at making contact if he could rework his swing
>>
>>76196026
In baseball we have these things called a changeup or a knuckle ball. The ball can travel as slow as 40 mph. If these balls don't manage to fool the batter, it's a home run every time.
>>
>>76196054
Yes that exists in cricket too

Pace and timing are both crucial. A faster ball is harder to hit but will go further if mistimed. This is an objective scientific fact.
>>
>>76195988
>Proven not to make a difference in distance.

Anyone who has seen a single game of cricket knows full tosses (balls that don't bounce) are easy pickings for batters. It's considered bad if a batter can't launch it to the boundary. There's no rule against not bouncing the ball, it's just if you don't bounce the ball it's considered a bad ball and you'll get smashed everywhere.

>>
>>76196085
That's only if you can assume a perfect set of circumstances and that's almost never the case. The ability to swing at full power while hitting the sweet spot on the bat are more important and much harder to do on a fast pitch

Show me a full toss that has traveled over (a verified) 430 feet?

Did you read the article I posted earlier?

Furthermore, in bat-and-ball games, bat speed is what generates power (obviously). A cricket bat is slightly heavier and much less aerodynamic. In addition to cricketers having poor pure power hitting mechanics, they aren't coming over, Chris Gayle or otherwise, to baseball and hitting a ball anywhere near as hard as baseball's top sluggers.

With a year or two to rework his swing? Maybe. Athletic freaks are athletic freaks, and Gayle does have massive experience swinging a piece of wood.
>>
>>76196159

Wasn't he known in cricket for having some power?

The contest was a HR derby, where power reigns, and he couldn't beat a 60 year old (when he himself was 29).
