Dunno if anyone posted this over the weekend but the nitro cars at Topeka were fast beyond insanity. Matt Hagan ran 3.802 338.85 mph in qualifying - fastest top speed for any vehicle ever in NHRA history.

The Charlotte Roval is just a half measure to keep SMI and IMS happy and if it rains then they have to make a call to close off the banks and run the apron depending on what Goodyear brings. These FS1 programs on the history of stock car are fantastic. Great story telling, and so many awesome stories.

The Tiny Lund one was pretty fucking cool. The 1992 Davey Allison one was mind blowing too. Dude had all those fucking broken bones and blood filled eyeballs and KEPT racing every single week. Shit like that would never happen these days.

Definitely recommend watching these to anyone who hasn't.

Utter really didn't leave the deadline room that much so I didn't see him in the common area where food was being served. FWIW he was actually quite nice to me - Someone I know at the Charlotte Observer recommended I introduce myself to him so we hit it off about that.

In terms of other beat reporters who stood out, Jeff Gluck was great. He gave me advice and told me about how he remembered being in a similar position when he was an intern with the Phillies. I got Weaver's number too, but we've known each other for a little while. Chase Wilhelm at FOX also went out of his way to be nice to me.

I will say though that everything you have heard about how NASCAR media members eat is true. The Media Center really spoils them - If you need an anecdote, I was on cake and cookie duty for the photographers during qualifying. I took a big tray of them from the media center to pit road, but I got re-routed by security and wasn't sure where to go. It was a bit of a predicament for a bit - Here I was in the middle of the spectator area with cake and cookies and I could hear all the whispers about "Damn, he's got cake and cookies!".

I've been there, it's a five hour drive, I've driven the Ring, I don't like camping with idiots that just want to drink and party, I'd go there if I could get into the VIP area with screens and broadcast but I'm too cheap to buy these tickets, I can watch everything with several broadcasts and live streams, getting a much better view.

You can walk around the track. Watch from Kemmel-straight how the cars driving at the bus-stop. The night is fucking beautiful. Watching the cars with a beer in your camping chair and a blanket on top with nearby fireworks at night or the dawn of the morning in freezing 6°C. Having monsoon rain the day before and like 30°C sun the next day. Weather changing constantly.
I were there in 2013 and 2015 with a friend. Maybe going this year again. It's a dream being there.

they built the NASCAR Hall of Fame building at a loss by selling it to Charlotte as a tourist destination, implying that pretty much everyone who buys a ticket at CMS will go to the HoF. Then they didn't.

The Frances are probably too proud to shut it down, so now they're doing crazy shit like putting in 90's guys like Rusty Wallace and Terry Labonte early to get people in the doors.

The flaw with the nomination and induction process is that NASCAR copies the MLB HoF by having writers and journos decide. The issue is that NASCAR is a private company, and they can and have pull credentials from writers if they write something negative about the sport. Never forget 2015 when Mike Helton pretty much came into the room where the voters were and strong armed them into voting Bruton Smith into the Hall of Fame, he was the top vote-getter that year.

Lonso only led because Ryan Hunter-Rey let him pass so he could save fuel. On top of that the big Oval winners lads like Castroneves were saving fuel early in the race. Castroneves moved from 19 start to almost winning the thing.
Alonso raced well but its not like he was amazing. He could win it in the future. He adapted better than the Indy road course guys like Pagenaud but he still is being over played. He did well but he took his 5th place start to 9th when his engine blew and was in 9th when the big boys were ready to move up to the front. Getting around Castroneves, Big Jaun, and Tony in the last 20 was going to be a lot harder than doing it in the first 50 like Alonso did.

The only thing I'll say it Alonso adapted much better than people like Pagenaud who still struggle on ovals despite being the best raod drivers in the series.

Also, apparently he didn't find out Austin went on fuel till he met with his Crew Chief post race as the other teams didn't find out till the closing laps that Gimmie and Autism were running a fuel milage strategy and had no time to react. Which is why after, he did a normal interview on the pit lane about how he was disapointed and upset but "Everythings Fine", but suddenly he was fucking furious going into the media center because he got told they got ruse cruised by Hendrick and RCR and RCR won out even though Kryle and Troox had the best cars on the track that day.

For Kryle, to get beaten while having the best car because of a fluke strategy. That really rustled his jimmies (And it's fucking hilarious)
