He was 16 and he was being hyped up to insane levels, his high school games were nationally broadcast. At 18, Reebok and Adidas each offered him $90 million, then Nike offered him $100 million. Cleveland, and really Ohio in general, is hardly a monolithic group though. You had plenty of people who were furious about Lebron leaving, and of course the media focused on them. Again, he was a teenager. 16/17/18 years old, his high school games on national tv, everyone calling him the next GOAT, companies shoving cash in his face....was tattooing "Chosen One" on his back dumb? Yes. But many teenagers year olds have done far dumber things with a lot less going for them. Adidas bought billboards in his hometown about him, before he even played a single minute in the NBA. Think about what that would to to a kid's ego.
