It'a a weird sitch with TG, because on one hand he was like the one guy who wasn't getting blinded by the hype of all of the money and manufacturer support CART had in the early 90s and was probably the only guy in most of the board meetings at the time going "What's going to happen in 5 years when Toyota/Mercedes/Ford all quit and nobody has any real equipment to use because of engine leases?"

On the other hand, he went for the nuclear option right out of the gate with "The Split" happening and used shit CART wanted (The stupid "25/8 Rule" that was a thing in 1996 & 1997 was floated by CART in 1990 or so) to spite them, only to have it blow up in his face...

and they actually had a really good product with the IRL peaking at around 2003/2004 with some really exciting side by side racing, close finishes and danicamania running wild...

then they decided they wanted more overtakes and changed some aero shit on the car, the result was that no one could pass because the leader would hug the bottom as usual but now you couldnt pull alongside the guy to try and pass around the outside, so all races became single file borefests
