Westbrook and Curry are not just exceptional athletically, they also have a mentality, some synthesis of motor skills and ability, that coalesces extremely well with basketball and a ball in their hands in particular. They're in an elite minority in that respect.

Our football is more specialized. You're stuck in one position and you only have so much you have to do in that position so you practice it over and over again until your routine and base set of actions are hammered into your head.

It's not like these guys are picking up any sport for the first time and becoming elite. They transition over from other sports that have pretty good correlation. Speed is always a good thing to have from sport to sport, as is hand eye coordination and catching ability.

Besides, most guys becoming elite football (not soccer) play it starting in middle school or early high school. The ones that only start in college and become elite are very rare and were usually stand out players at whatever sport they transitioned from.
