Anyone can play in any position, it doesn't mean they'll be good at it. And without a decent goalkeeper, the opposition can shoot anywhere in front of the half-way line and potentially score. The reason you think that goalkeepers have an easy job is because a lot of them do the basics incredibly well so it looks like its second nature.
