IDK why people are singling out our stars. This isn't basketball. A whole team has to work in tune to win in the playoffs. The biggest issue I see is the physicality. We are just missing some big bodies to win the board and forecheck battles. And our faceoffs are absolute crap, although Anisimov just doesn't look back to form yet, so our possession is just in the crapper. We need some bigger guys who can win these battles and get the puck to our stars like we had in the past.
It's a possession game in the playoffs, and our smaller roster these past two years have led to a decline because they just knocked off the puck way to easily. In the offseason, this team will need to make some moves to get some bigger forwards.
It's disheartening to see "It looks like Toews doesn't want it." It's hard to for Toews to play his game, near the net, when he has to chase the puck his whole shift.

Game 1: got off to a slow start, gave up an early one and were the better team for 2 periods and just couldn't find a way to put one past Rinne. 9 games out of 10 like that a puck goes in.
Game 2: We got torched. It happens.
Game 3: went up 2-0, scored one off a lucky bounce off the glass and another on a BS non call. Went to OT, admittedly got outplayed but we didn't get run out the goddamn building.
I'm not making excuses for this team. Toews has to be better. The big guns like Panairin and Kane need to get their asses in gear, but the series has been closer than the 3-0 lead suggests.
Now look, if you think the Hawks are gonna waltz through the next 4 games en route to the second round, you're delusional. If you think this team has no shot and bowman should just blow it all up and trade everyone, you're the other side of that coin. This series isn't over. This is still the same team that won the West. In a world where the Cubs can win the World Series, this team CAN come back. For now the goal is simple: just win one. Take it one game at a time.

Maybe I can't think very coherently right now after a third straight demoralizing loss, but I'm sorry, unless the Blackhawks manage to become the fifth team in NHL history to pull off the miraculous reverse sweep, I am done with Toews. He has been abysmal for two years now. This is the norm for him now. Everybody thought he was "back" during his good February, but that was actually an anomaly for him nowadays. How many playoff games now without a goal? It's just not acceptable. His contract is killing this team. You can't have two players with a 10.5 mil cap hit each in a salary cap world and stay competitive. And it's become crystal, crystal clear in recent years which one the Hawks should keep and which one the Hawks should move on from. I'll always be grateful to Toews for captaining the team to three Cups, but he is nowhere near the player he once was. Okay, so after being really depressed for an hour and a half, I've mostly reached the acceptance stage of grief. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like our year. I'm not saying give up completely, and I'm still rooting for the Hawks to pull out a win or two, but the Preds have exposed some fundamental problems with the team and I think we have to accept them and try to fix them.
Luckily I think they largely are fix-able. The D-core does need to be revamped. We're too old and slow. Oduya and Campbell just don't look good out there. Seabs had a so-so game tonight, in some ways one of his better ones, but he's been a let down for pretty much the second half of the season. If Stan can move him, it should be done.
That leaves the question of who can replace them. I believe Kempny and Forsling will be ready next year (and we really need to re-sign Kempny, because he's one of our best young D-men). If there are any younger depth D-men to sign, Stan is usually good at recognizing potential.

Forwards are a bit more tricky. In many ways, they have the opposite problem from the defense. They're just a little too young and inexperienced. We have a lot of forward prospects. Although I really like him and think he's been good for us, some have mentioned trading Arty, and maybe that should be considered. Schmaltz showed promise when he centered that line this season. If he can improve his face-offs, he could be up to the task. However, that would mean losing one of our few players who is good at getting to the crease. It's a big decision, especially because it means once again looking for a piece to play on Toews' LW.
I think the coaches and the front office need to take a long hard look at the team and themselves. They can't just say we got the top of the conference and just got unlucky in the playoffs. They have to acknowledge that we currently have some fundamental flaws and work to rectify them. But I also think some here are getting pretty extreme with their calls to blow up the core completely. 19, 88, 4, 2, 72, 81...they aren't, and shouldn't be, going anywhere. They do have another cup run or two in them. But we need some pieces that complement them a bit more. We need some physical players, ones that will stop other teams from bullying us.
Anyways, I'm really disappointed right now, but I'm not done with this team, or this core. They deserve a kick in the ass, but then it's time to get back to business.

Look, I get it. We're upset that we lost a game where we were starting to turn things around. A few calls didn't go our way and we made some dumb decisions in the 3rd and OT which lead to the loss. If it happens to any other team "Well, that's hockey baby!" but if it happens to us? Jesus, y'all are acting like we're in some kind of 40+ year cup drought.

The facts are simple: The majority of the players aren't performing anywhere near their potential. Something is obviously wrong on a grand scale. Teams in the top of the conference don't just have a meltdown like this and lose 3 games straight, two of them being shutouts.

My guess is that the problems start from the top-down. Probably starting with Coach Q and Kitch. The plays designed to get in to the O-zone have had a small success rate, but we still keep implementing them, because, well, the players are being told to, IMO. I mean, what sounds more likely; all top 8-9 players on the Blackhawks suddenly forget how to pass and shoot for 3+ games straight — or — there's a problem seeping down from the Front Office or the coaching that's inhibiting our players from working correctly together?

I just cannot believe a player like Hjalmarsson can be making so many passing mistakes, and how players like Keith, Panarin, Hjalmarsson, etc, can effectively disappear from the ice. I can't remember once when a commentator mentioned Keith's name for making a big play over the air, since the playoffs started. Odd, no?

I know y'all are upset about Toews. Me too. But he's been having issues for a little while now. My guess? Personal bullshit. He's taking a lot of unnecessary risks — i.e. going to the net for a gloved puck, and taking 3 cross-checks to the back and neck, for what? It's not going to get under their skin! And why aren't we throwing a few jabs when players get near Crow? (Because they aren't rushing Crow when he gloves the puck - you fucking morons!).

I had high hopes for this team, as usual. The hockey we were playing in February and early March was amazing. I know we are in the decline of our dynasty run but I thought maybe this year, with the resurrection of Hossa and rookies stepping up, we would go deep.
Instead, now I find myself day dreaming about Hawks season tickets becoming cheaper in the next few years so I can line myself up for the next time we have good players. Let's face the facts here: Defense is getting old, rookies need more time, and with younger faster teams starting to emerge (Maple Leafs, Oilers, etc.) we are slowly going to fade within the next 5 years.
Just like what happened to the Bears in the early - mid 2000's. Stellar defense that kept us in the hunt every season, until you realized Urlacher was getting old, Mike Brown's body was falling apart, and the D-Line started to crumble.
If this Hawks team doesn't change at all going into next season, I expect to see more of the same; make the playoffs, maybe win a round or two. In the next couple of years, the weight will shift onto the younger players of the team. Its up to Toews, Kane and Co. to mentor and help build the younger players up and prep them for their glory days. I dread the day I see a core Hawks player dress up for another team, and who knows if that day will even come.
But, I still have dumb ass faith because I know what this team is capable of. I know people are calling out Toews for his post game interview but I assure you that locker room was not silent after that game, or any of the games this series as a matter of fact.
As a reminder, these are my opinions and you are allowed to disagree with them. As a final word to this long ass post I decided to type while at work I must say:
Haws in 7. Reverse sweep here we come. Crow gets a shutout in Game 4.

Okay so yes I'm pissed about being down 3-0 in the series but some of the Hawks fans on this subreddit are acting as if we've never been a successful team before.... I mean for fucks sake we won 3 cups in 6 years, an act that won't be repeated for a very very long time. Imagine being a fucking Wild or Blues fan who lose in the playoffs year after year.


I'm not saying we should be content with being mediocre but don't start acting as if this team is worthless. It shouldn't come as a surprise that we can't keep up with fast, hard hitting teams when we have so many veterans (especially on defense). This is the first playoff series where we seem like the "old" team, the team that's been there a few too many times and maybe isn't as sharp or as hungry as a younger team. Last year wasn't that, that was just losing a series because a couple bounces and a couple games went the other way. It was still close.

This doesn't feel close. Even when we had the 2-0 lead tonight, it didn't feel as secure as it would have in the past. We were always second best on contested pucks, we couldn't break their defensive traps and couldn't get out of our own zone. Pekka Rinne has been massive this series, but we haven't put nearly the amount of pressure on him that we should. Most of our 36 shots tonight were not difficult saves he had to make. On the other side, Crow got absolutely peppered with all kinds of shots from all kinds of different angles. The Preds' cycling of the puck was tremendous, and their forechecking put us on the backfoot for 9 out of the 10 periods this series.

Having said that, this is still the most playoff experienced team out there. If there is one team that can pull off the miracle, it's this team IF they find their January-March form where we were steamrolling teams. But that's a huge IF.

The Preds remind me of the Hawks in 2010. It is a mix of fun youngsters with savvy old vets, a solid defense and a goalie playing out of his mind. All complimented by playing some intense hockey. So many times during this series I've looked at the Predators, stopped myself and just murmured "oh so that's what it would be like playing against us when we were on our best." And it's fucking infuriating.

I still believe. And this team has given me 8 years of the benefit of the doubt that they can come back and do some crazy shit like come back form 3-0 down. So until it's over, I'll be there.
