2006, I was in Italy with my family for the World Cup (we lived there for a while). It was a very small town in Bari, and the commune had set up a giant screen in the middle of the piazza at the center of town. EVERYONE was there, watching together, holding hands, high tension, incredible sense of togetherness.

When Fabio Grosso scored that last penalty kick, the feeling that rushed over everyone at once was indescribable. Giant roars from the entire town erupted, everyone was jumping up and down, people who were complete strangers were crying in each other's arms, people going around kissing each other, driving cars down the street honking horns, people marching through the roads waving flags, finding friends and embracing each other in tears, chanting, screaming, etc. It was pure ecstasy, and easily the best day of my life, by far. I remember marching through the street with my friends, shouting the Italian national anthem in unison, and doing cartwheels and backflips in the middle of the road while everyone was cheering. I remember spotting my dad in the crowd with his friends, and we both ran into each others arms and just started crying together. It was a beautiful moment for everyone in the country.

I know it sounds silly, but some people just won't understand the pure feeling of joy from something so seemingly trivial as a soccer game. It was more than that.

That's what it feels like, and I do hope that you win at some point and experience it. You guys deserve it, I've always been a fan of your team.

I remember the 2002 world cup, since the games were in korea and japan the final was like 3am in a monday in here, still looked like the fucking carnival was on, after Brazil won everybody (EVERYBODY) went out in the streets, lighting fireworks, making barbecues out of nowhere, shooting guns (t.Favelafag), and generally going insane. The next day was literally a national holiday, my school was closed for a couple of days because everyone was still celebrating, and then we got another day off a couple of days later because I lived in the capital of hueland, and the players came on to meet the president. And to top it all off one of the players (Lúcio) was from the same hood I was, in the outskirts of the capital, so it was another day off for us when he came back there and was paraded around in the firetruck. Those were the days, man.

i stayed out partying until like 1am, and i was 10 yo

I was ill during the semifinal, spent the whole night on my bed, the only thing I remember about it is my grandpa waking me up telling me >we scored.
The penalty shootout was a surreal experience. Sadly I was still a wee lad at the time so I couldn't enjoy the mayhem to its fullest, but it was quite... a thing. Last thing I remember clearly was watching trezeguet miss his shot through the smallest TV screen in town in a bar, and then complete chaos.
2012 was wildly different. I feel like the general disbelief of having made it this far with that horrible team and manager overcame the enthusiasm. I went to this small theatre that had a screen set up but by half time we had already gotten over it.

Today there would be a lot of people staying at home in fear of a terrorist attacks

I don't remember 1998 because i was too young, however i remember 2006, we were at a restaurant with maybe 100 other people, we were playing with the other kids before the match started, and the first thing i saw of the match was Zidane's penalty, everyone was happy, but still nervous during the rest of the match, then it happened, and we were all shocked, and then we lost and it was a really sad moment.
I hope we can win the world cup another time.

It feels just like when you post a new meme in /sp/ and everyone laughs and upvotes it to the front page, everyone think your post is epic and then they vote it to be archive it for eternity. When the Phillies won the world series in 2008 my entire town went wild. People were running in the streets, shooting fireworks, banging together pots and pans.

One dude in my neighborhood even had a legit 19th century artillery cannon and was shooting off blanks that you could hear for miles, shit was crazy.
