MLB TV viewership is fine.

It kills on regionals and the World Series will draw well even without big market and star driven teams.

The NBA's "popularity" is a mirage. Lebron is popular. Curry is popular. Anytime the NBA Finals don't feature a megastar, the ratings plummet.

>>75213941

>>
>>75220485
That's what I find so amazing. Despite having very similar viewership as the NBA, the MLB is still able to take in nearly twice the revenue. I think it has something to do with merchandise sales. There are so many people that buy baseball hats without actually watching or caring about the game.
>>
>>75220521
MLB plays twice as many games.
>>
>>75220521
They don't have similar attendance. MLB has much higher average attendance due to bigger stadium size.

Also there's a lot more crossover of NFL > MLB fans than NFL > NBA. Most have baseball as their second favorite.
>>
>>75220521
>Despite having very similar viewership as the NBA, the MLB is still able to take in nearly twice the revenue.

Twice as many games helps.

But I'd say the MLB is a healthier league than the NBA overall (at least in the US, as I realize the NBA is a more global brand).

The NBA is way too star dependent. The World Series is pretty much guaranteed to draw more than 12 million average no matter which teams are playing. The last time the NBA had a non-Lebron/Kobe Finals, average viewership was under 10 million. Hell, it was even under 10 million in Lebron's first finals.

Yeah these all make perfect sense. It's weird that it feels counterintuitive. I suppose that's just the "baseball is dying" meme.

>>
>>75213925
Because it's our second biggest sport
>>
>>75220607
>I suppose that's just the "baseball is dying" meme.

The "baseball is dying" crowd wrongly use national television ratings (usually on ESPN) to make their case. (World Series ratings trend older, but the WS also goes up against regular season NFL games, so fans of baseball teams no longer in the running have already switched over to following football season).

Of course the ratings are going to be "poor" for a national Mets/Marlins games or something. Fans of those teams will be watching the game on their RSN, while MLB fans will be watching their own teams.

But an NBA fan will usually tune in for a "can't miss" Lebron/Curry matchup.

>The US dollar rebounded this afternoon after languishing in the red earlier following Trump's remarks about the currency the previous day.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, the US President said the dollar is "getting too strong" and that he would like to see interest rates remaining low.

After slumping 0.6pc in intraday trade, the dollar recovered against a basked of major currencies, rising some 0.3pc.

It followed robust macro economic data from the US, while trading was also thinner than usual due to the impending Good Friday holiday.

sure it's comparable to NFL alone. Adding in all 4 American sports and it isn't even close. The secondary sports in europe make a tiny fraction of the revenue of divegrass, hardly even relevant. The 2nd division divegrass make a little bit more as seen on that chart but still a tiny blip compared to the secondary American sports or even to "2nd division" football and basketball aka college.

NCAA itself makes 1B in revenue but individual conferences and schools make a shit ton more than that

The division I football conferences made 9.2 billion in 2014-15. Basketball probably a couple billion more

Not exactly true. Firstly, consider that cricket is baskcally a global sport, because it's watched by most fucking pajeets in the world. And since I won't be arsed to look for numbers in england, I'll show you the numbers for Poland

Ski Jumping 48% of all households in Poland watched the (3rd rate) World Championship this winter. The combined amount of TV viewers across the world is 2,781 billion in only 2000 tv hours (better than fucking La Liga

Final of Volleyball WC 2014 was watched by 15 million TV viewers in Poland, which was more than any football match and had a 53% share in the market.

Handball WC 2015 3rd place match was 8mln people and 33% share in the market.

And that's only Poland. It doesn't include Alpine Skiing, F1, Tennis and other global sports.
>>
>>75222977
We're talking revenue here senpai, not popularity. Other sports may be popular locally but they just don't bring in nearly the same kind of money.

The revenue for the french rugby league is about 300M and for the english league it's 150M. Those are likely the two biggest not-soccer leagues in Europe. Euroleague basketball makes about 150M and KHL I can't find shit about other than it's struggling financially. When it comes down to economics these leagues just barely hold a candle to soccer over there.

Cricket and rugby in general have very little revenue relative to other big sports since the primary draw of both, especially cricket, is international competitions. There are no hugely successful leagues like we have for our big 4 sports in the USA or most of the world has for soccer.

The more global type sports like boxing, tennis, golf, and especially formula 1 are for sure the biggest money makers in europe after divegrass but still way behind. They're also big money makers in the US though
>>
>>75222430
You're embarrassing yourself, Juan Oliveskinner.
>>
>>75222977
Cricket is an international sport though.

Even the IPL which could develop into a massive league is only for two months.

MLB is a local sport. Being that it is "luckswing", you can't tell if a player is good based on one game. You need to watch dozens to tell. Which makes it very boring to watch a neutral game on national TV with players you don't know. Baseball people watch their own local team and no one else. You would need to look at local TV ratings to get the true sense of its popularity. And you'd see that the bring in huge amounts of $ because the TV deal for a baseball team means that for 162 days you have a 3-hour telecast watched live by a huge portion of the local market, depending on the city. For example, the current Dodgers TV contract pays them 300 mil per season.

>How does the MLB manage to have such a high revenue despite not having the levels of viewership that other sports possess?- 84 posts and 12 image replies shown.

because they have a million regular season games + best-of-7 playoffs

all that ticket-revenue is what makes the difference
>>
>>75223288
But TV viewership is directly tied to ad revenue and since I can't find direct financial reports, I decided to simply look up popularity. Also, aside from Footy and Basketball, international tournaments are more popular than any leagues (no matter if national or Euroleague), while only Hockey and Basketball have real international presence.
>>
>>75220485
So according to that chart, real football ("soccer") is equally popular to basketball at this point?
>>
>>75225327
no because this chart is "what is your favorite sport". so all it shows is that soccer has high hardcore fans but way lower casual fans, and basketball has low hardcore but way more casual fans.

so equivalent amount of people have basketball and soccer as their favorite sport, but just reading the ratings and money and such, basketball is still way more popular.

It's a regional sport. Football overtook baseball in popularity in about 1971. Football is the national game. Baseball sold 71M tickets last year. If the ticket sales and popularity decline to dangerous levels, MLB will drop a few ballclubs. It'll always remain popular in the northeast. Areas with large White and Hispanic populations, it'll do well. The great ballpark experiences will bring in millennials. Ticket sales are down so far this year. MLB prays for the Yankees, Mets, Dodgers, Red Sox and Cubs to do well. That's what they need.
