Hockey was a completely different game when Howe was at the top - defenceman were complete garbage and could barely skate backwards back then. Whereas Mario scored 69 goals in 60 games when he had cancer. The only reason he doesn't get more attention is because he competed at the same time as Gretzky.

Lemieux and it's not even comparable. If you took each players time period and how they dominated and translated it to today, Howe would be a Matt Cooke who would get suspended, Messier would be Marchand, the rocket would be a manlet who would get blasted by Burns, Doughty etc. Orr would do alright but Coffey was as good or better than him at skating and Niedermayer and Karlsson are superior versions of him that play/played in a much better league. With the excessive amount of penalties being called nowadays and the size of Mario, he would be like an even better Lindros who could do anything he wanted on the ice and you couldn't really stop him without holding or hooking
