What went wrong?
No seriously what went wrong? They have a large, loyal fanbase, good stadium, big derby. They've been spending big despite being in debt. This club should be a Chinese investor's dream but instead it's a nightmare.
never should have let yedlin go

It could be said that their history isn't all that special when compared to other clubs, plus they're not particularly marketable or distinct in terms of their image/colours.
Shitty administrative staff, basically the people in charge behind the scenes that don't get replaced when the manager gets the blame.
Didn't have Newcastle to take 6 points off and save them this year
The North East is a footballing shithole, that's why.
Well, it is for the league clubs anyway. They're ridiculously good in non-league and dominate the FA Vase.
>Win the rest of our games and we stay up, says Sunderland’s David Moyes
they're just random relegation side #239
what the fuck did you expect from them, and >moyes

mikka, if you had ever been to Sunderland you would know. Total shithole that nobody wants.
They're where Aston Villa were a few seasons ago. Full of too much dead wood, particularly Man Utd rejects like O'Shea, that are on too much money and don't give a shit.
Moyes has simply exacerbated a shit situation.
Last summer, they've given up on M'Vila and went for Ndong for club's record transfer fee. Turns out, the lad is shite.
Also, they've been living off big-club scraps of the table and their most recent ones (Januzaj, Gibson, Oviedo) were worse than ever.

N'Dong is okay, just an average identikit Premier League player, which is better than a lot of what they have and at a better age too.
I think it's the transfer business overall though, only Wickham/McClean/Van Aanholt sold for profits over the last few years and a poor squad. And that's over a long time and a lot of backroom regimes so it's hard to blame any one person more than the owner

I don't know who is in charge of handling the club's day to day business, but everything about them is a mess. Their transfer policy is shit, it's just a can of random players from all over the place in the winter mostly, very short-term and they're never able to carry on in the summer to build something. And it's usually in the mold of the manager that got sacked around March, so the new manager gets rid of those, brings in his type of players and then he gets sacked in November. Not sure if they even have a youth academy.
They have a big stadium, but it's just that a lot of people live in Sunderland and nobody outside Sunderland cares about Sunderland. So it's not like there is some kind of potential to grow. I'll bet that internationally people confuse them with Southampton until there was a clear gulf in class between the two of them. Big fish in a small pond. A small, dirty, ugly pond that's bombshelled and depleted and riddled with diseases.
Uh, this is a club that at its absolute peak was mid table. They've swindled their way out of relegation on numerous occasions, it's painfully obvious to everyone that they do not deserve to be in the EPL. Why would any investor throw their money at a club that's about to lose a heap of its value due to its imminent relegation?
