Why do people cheer for sports teams when they aren't from that city?
Why do you get excited about that particular team?
It makes me happy whenever they win

How did it happen in the first place though? Did you just decide "I'm going to cheer for Team X from City Y" or did you self-insert into one of their players, or did you just bandwagon a team after they won their league one year?

I started watching Madrid JUST before they got BTFO 0-5 by Guardiola's Barca, everyone in school was talking about it the day before so I watched it with a buddy of mine,I only knew of TSUUUUUUman because hes popular with the girls here so when I saw him playing for Madrid,I was like "Sheit hes gonna rekt these wannabees so hard" and surprise surprise, Madrid got dominated.
The game was entertaining enough in that it got me interested as to how a team like Real Madrid could get dominated so badly, weeks go by and after reading up on them along with watching video after video of their past glories,I thought maybe I should join the ride and see where Mou would take them. I was the only one who bandwagoned Madrid in a school full of Manchester United fans so I kinda felt special.

My dad's from that city and raised me to root for them for so long that even when I developed an individual identity pretty much everywhere else in life, not rooting for that team above all others still just feels off.
a player might be from your town or something. parents can have an influence. sometimes people like the play style of a team.
let me ask you OP, why do people default to liking a team simply because it is nearby, when statistically they do not attend games in person?

I root for Liverpool because I was born on September 3, 1996.
96 is self-explanatory, and 9/3 in Bongland is 3/9. 39 people died at Heysel.
When I learned the significance of those numbers, I couldn't not be a fan of Liverpool. It was fate.

I should also mention that it's fun when they win, because typically /sp/ becomes very angry. But it's a tough trade-off because when Liverpool loses, it is Hell.

Hey! Fellow Sept. 3rd birthday!
I usually choose a team because I like the logo/mascot and maybe stadium they play at, or their shitposters on /sp/
