The pinnacle of American Football is viewed as the ad break.

Every rule in the entire game is geared towards maximising the amount of ad breaks that can be attempted within an hour. Its great viewing. What a thrilling sport.

Cricket is OK but I can't deal with all that sport. Sometimes several hours can pass without a single break! Can you imagine?
I hardly ever get to sit and watch advertisements for eight minutes while commentators frantically create stats to read out in cricket. If cricket wants to compete they need far more of it.

Also, there's far too much strategy in cricket. They bowl in too many areas in too many ways and they preplan their intricate game plan for the next four days far too frequently. What cricket needs to do is make the game shorter, so less time is spent actually watching the sport. Did you guys see the latest Broncos vs 49ers game? 15 television breaks to 34! The 49ers had no answer to Bronco's tactics of generating advertising revenue by constantly ending plays to cut to an ad break.

Its this level of corporate support that is missing in cricket, where as you rightly point out, its just a bunch of athletic guys playing a sport against each other for five days. Yawn

Americans will also never understand that, when you compile every single statistic from every single popular sport in history, one person stands far above all others as being the single greatest athlete of all-time. No basketball player compares. No football player compares. No baseball player compares. He was truly a one-off anomaly that changed everything.

i've never watched a cricket match but if i understand what you're saying here then this happens in baseball too. in baseball, especially in big situations, batters consistently foul off pitches that aren't quite what they're looking for but can't risk taking a strike on. if the batter is especially good this pitcher/batter foul battle can go on for a while, straining everyone else's patience.

also in baseball, good batters will find gaps in defenses, try to place balls based on the base runner positioning, or try to exploit weaknesses in defenses. catchers in turn will give instructions to their defense if they think they're at a disadvantage. the strategies can get fairly complicated depending on the situation.

personally i find baseball boring and the only sports i follow regularly are basketball and soccer, largely because i don't need much to watch during the summer. baseball has other shortcomings which you've completely failed to even mention let alone discuss insightfully, like the protracted length of games (which the mlb is actively trying to change), the reliance on the whims of each umpires strike zone, the lack of pro/rel in the professional league system. a system which would be difficult to implement due to the franchise nature of the league. so we're stuck with terrible teams languishing at the bottom of the standings for years.

you clearly haven't spent enough time watching baseball and just wanted to vent angrily at american culture. address that first then come back later with a more cogent argument on why baseball lacks a particular type of strategic component found in other sports you actually enjoy.

Cricket is an ultimate game of skill.

In baseball you literally get a huge novelty sized padded and webbed catching glove, the ball soft and squishy and it is not even allowed to bounce!

In cricket you can unironically murder a batsmen without breaking a single rule. In baseball if you so much as through the ball anywhere outside of the batsman's designated swinging arc he doesn't even have to face another bowl, he just walks (walks) away and is spared from future embarrassment because some japanese dude didnt throw him a waste high full toss pie two feet outside off.

That's right, in baseball there is a pre-arranged bowl that inevitably is thrown every single fucking time. You can't bouce the ball (taking spin and seam completely out of the equation). You cannot change the angle of delivery. You cannot bowl boucer yorker combos. You cannot work on the bowl for half a day until it starts reverse swinging. There are no off cutter slow balls, there are no googlie wronguns there are no flippers or skidders or chinamen. Just full tosses outside off every single fucking ball.

Finally, and this is the clincher, the batsman unironically gets three chances. If you are playing in your back yard against your seven your old niece bowling heat you may just give her a second chance if you get her out first bowl, but otherwise in cricket you make one tiny error your day is over. In baseball, you can fuck up and the umpire is like "lmao take it back you can have two more goes at that."

T20 is OK but I can't deal with all that hitting and running. Sometimes a whole game can pass without a single leave being attempted! Can you imagine?

I hardly ever get to sit and watch for eight minutes while a batsman takes his guard and resets six times, followed by a leave, in T20. If T20 wants to compete they need far more of it.

Also, there's far too much game time in T20. They score too many runs and go far too long without slowing the game down with leaves, forward defences and 4 sightscreen adjustments. What T20 need to do is make leaves and blocks worth more, so more time is defending and watching one guy play all day. Did you guys see the latest Durham vs Worcestershire game? 1.3 runs per over to 1.2! Worcs had no answer to Durham's tactics of leaving every ball that's not on the stumps out then asking the umpire to end play early for bad light.

Its this level of tactical sophistication that is missing in T20, where as you rightly point out, its just a bunch of athletic guys trying to score runs against each other. Yawn

Cricket is basically a dumb and boring version of baseball. The amount of subtlety and tactical and athletic ability on display in baseball makes cricket looks like the shitty joke that it is.

Cricket will NEVER be able to match the tradition and history and folklore of baseball either.

And don't even get me started on attendance and revenue. Baseball attracts 75 million people annually just in the MLB. Further 25 million people attend Japanese baseball and add other millions in caribbean and other nations. On the other hand, if you add up all the cricket attendances worldwide, they would struggle to cross even 10 million ROFLOL.

And oh, MLB is a $9.5 BILLION annual industry! Cricket is not even 1/10th of that LMAO.
