you mean world cup hosts you idiot, and on top of that hosts have instant qualification

they'll probably import some randos from africa to play for them, then just disband and never be heard from again

IHF was FIFA levels of corrupt that year, they also invented a reason to DQ Australia in favor of Germany who had failed to qualify

Money isn't magic, things take time. They did just got Marcelo Lippi as their new coach though, and beat South Korea 1-0

It will be years before the effects will show in their national team.

But they do have the unironic goal of winning the World Cup in 2030, the Chinese President (or Leader or whatever that position is called over there) himself gave the "order" to achieve that....

>Qatar player naturalisation
>A large number of players in the Qatar team had been naturalised in the years leading up to the championship. According to IHF rules, to gain eligibility for a new national team, a player cannot have played for another nation for three years in an official match. This allowed several foreign-born players, including Spanish-born Borja Vidal, Goran Stojanović and Jovo Damjanović from Montenegro, and Bertrand Roiné who previously played for France, to play for the Qatar team at the championship. According to the Frankfurter Allgemeine, only four of the 17 players in the squad were native to Qatar.
>Head of the Qatar Handball Federation, Ahmed Mohammed Abdulrab Al Shaabi, acknowledged the policy in a statement in June 2013, saying "We're a small nation with limited human resources, so we had to bring players from outside in the past." He also announced an end to the policy at the time, adding however that they "[might] make an exception only in the case of an experienced goalkeeper." In January 2014, Danish sports agent Mads Winther said he had met with "contacts involved with Qatar" regarding the possibility of naturalising Danish players.
>The practice was criticised by Austrian goalkeeper after his team's loss to Qatar in the round of 16, saying "It [felt] like playing against a world selection team" and "I think it is not the sense of a world championship." At a press conference during the championship, Qatar head coach Valero Rivera declined to comment on the matter. Spanish player Joan Cañellas did not think it was an issue, saying "If they can do it, why not."
>After the controversial semi-final against Poland, and reaching the final as a result the practice was even more criticised, with players such as Danijel Šarić having now represented four different national teams.

>>
>Paid fans
>Qatar flew in about 60 Spanish fans to cheer for Qatar during the championship.

>Refereeing
>During the first 12 matches of the tournament, 143 two-minute suspensions were awarded by the referees, a figure that came under strong criticism from teams, who had not been informed of the IHF Referee Committee's instructions to referees commanding them to keep a strict disciplinary line.
>The referees were widely accused of being one-sided in favour of the hosts. Especially at the matches against Austria, Germany and Poland. After the final whistle, the Polish players showed their discontent by ironically applauding the three referees.

I'm not saying it would be a likely win. The AFC is largely joke NTs and the Socceroos have no excuse for drawing 4 of our matches thus far.

But growing up (I still remember the inter-continental matches for the 2002 campaign, where we lost to URG) my best soccer memory was finally winning through to the 2006 WC. Since Australia moved to the AFC I don't feel like we've really deserved our berths as much.

Doing it all again, against the USMNT would be pretty fucking cool.

>>
>>74906793
What really is going to happen is there will be a huge influx of mediocre chinese players in western leagues, the nt will eventually start qualifying to WC but the league will never get popular and to win a cup you need a special kind of motivation.
Anyway, good academy isn't as important as the first few years of professional career.
Not to mention the direction they're going can drastically change.

Most Arab countries fall into these two categories: so rich the government just gives you money for nothing so burning your ass playing soccer isn't a logical career choice and so fucked up you're too busy trying to survive to even attempt to play soccer.

Portugal was once a powerful country, which started the European colonial era, but due to many tactical mistakes (first joining up with Spain and then breaking up with it and also a not very long-sighted strategy in the colonies) became more and more irrelevant over the centuries.

The 40 years of rule of the borderline fascist Salazar also prevented Portugal from growing as fast as most Western European countries in the 20th century and due to its unfavorable geographical position at the European edge and in "Spain's shadow", trade as well as tourist relations are harder to maintain for Portugal than for its big Iberian brother.

Today it is an almost forgotten country at the edge of Europe and the poorest country in Western Europe, which state household is being kept afloat by the richer EU states.
A tragic history really.

But at least Portugal finally managed to win the European Championship last year, the first major trophy in the country's history.
So maybe things are finally looking up for Portugal again!

I lived in China until the end of last year and can tell you this isn't true at all, the league is becoming more and more popular every year. China's population means they really don't need to give a shit about it being popular outside China.

If you mean economically then you are probably right. But unless the whole region becomes "more popular" it will never become elite, if they don't develop homegrown talent, the european stars will just fade away.
