It has little to do with conference size for UF. The SEC is massive in all respects, but who besides KY has done shit? Only UF. I was there when they won both, it was magical sure, but it started well before that when BD busted his ass recruiting all over the fucking world. I remember him two years before I even went on campus showing up to my local rec center in Miami, to recruit some kid Adrian Thomas (I knew him too used to run cross country with him) who would later be a five year major minutes guy for UM. Everyone and their mother knew Adrian was going to stay in Miami, and I tried to tell Billy this, but he was professional as fuck and said "he's got the talent and personality and that's enough for me to make the good faith pitch to him because I believe in what I am selling".

I knew then he wasn't guaranteed nattys but was guaranteed at least success, because he was willing to not just sell a message, but buy into it himself. And credit to him, he not only won two, but put plenty of kids in Europe for semi pro. And even crazier, the month after he won his second, the Magic gave him the godfather offer. Five years, top five money.

He took it, no one blamed him. BUT, he had sold the next gen of recruits on him being there, and it weighed in his conscience to leave, along with having to uproot a couple young sons with the move. So he did something ive never seen in my life. He "had a change of heart", and I don't even think they made that up. He asked to walk from the contract, and the Magic trusted his word enough to release him on just that alone, no penalties. He came back and coached another solid five or six years, finally leaving on as good terms as you can.
