Because it's a perfectly designed sport that is all about building tension which Japanese culture seems to love. From film making, television, manga and animu, the Japanese appreciate a well built moment and that's where baseball surpasses any other sport. Every pitch is build up in a competition between batter and pitcher.
It's a very dramatic sport with perfectly designed rules.

it actually took a downturn during the war because it was seen as an american institution. relations between the countries have been good since though, and they've had a professional league there for over 50 years.

Pretty bad punctuation you got there, "English teacher." Not to mention that bad case of anti-Jappo cynicism that it seems every faggot catches while they delude their own weeb asses into staying there.
