I want to talk about Mike Trout.

When was the last time we saw a position player as good as Trout? Really think about that. Who was the last player before him that looked this can't miss. A Rod i think. A Rod had a five year stretch that was better than Trout's five year stretch but it certainly wasn't his first five years. It's incredible what this guy has done before age 25.

Why don't we hear more about Trout? Like his biggest endorsement is fucking Super Pretzel. That's his brand.
Do you think people are nervous that he might be on teh roids? Do you think it's because he's kind of a goofy looking white guy?
Because the things he's doing are really far beyond any other current player in the world with the possible exception of Brady. LeBron James is really good but Trout is doing things that you have to go back to guys like Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth to find common ground. That's some pretty fucking good company for a hundred plus year old sport.

Trout has outperformed Griffey Jr in the first five years of their respective careers. And he blows away Bonds first five, it's not even close.

Unless you were talking about the steroid thing. But I think baseball still carry's that stigma. Lots of people, and people who were kids in 2007 still remember all the steroids, steroids, steroids talk from MLB. Baseball handled the issue as poorly as possible, keeping it in the limelight while they were getting it out of the game. I think that hurt them with younger people, whose parents didn't want to expose them to it.
>>
>>74786553
true. the Angels have only one playoff trip in Trout's five seasons, and that was a first-round exit.
>>
>>74786591
>>74786593

If we're talking about huge head roided up Bonds with his 1.400 OPS that got people talking, but I'm thinking more of, when was the last time we saw such a buzz around a guy in only his first five years. He has all the makings of a potential baseball GOAT just from his batting stats. And he's doing it during a pitching era.
>>
>>74786663

They did have the best record that year though. Playoffs are a crapshoot anyways.

Angels will be great again in 2018 when they get their pitchers back and when Hamilton is finally off the books.

That makes sense. I'm a Yankees fan but I recognize how ridiculous Trout is. In his first five full years in baseball his OPS average is .975

And he steals bases.
>>
>>74786663
Barry's last three seasons in Pittsburgh and first two in SF were greater than anything Trout has done in his first five. Look that shit up.

But Barry's first four seasons were not.
>>
>>74786768
Then you are missing the point. The OP was talking about when was the last time there was a young phenom like Trout.

The true answer is Griffey but not even Griffey was this good his first five years.

I think Ty Cobb had the greatest first five years in baseball. He'll never be topped.
>>
>>74786839
OPS+ through age 25, plus career PA's through 25:

1. Ted Williams 190 2613
2. Ty Cobb 180 4339
3. Frank Thomas 177 2328
4. Lou Gehrig 177 2629
5. Mickey Mantle 174 4114
6. Stan Musial 173 2655
7. Jimmie Foxx 171 3940
8. Mike Trout 170 3558
9. Albert Pujols 167 3428
10. Tris Speaker 166 3234
>>
Pupils was great his first 5 years but his defense was nowhere near Trout's.

That's some pretty great company. And if we're talking about being a complete player, Williams didn't want to play the field, Thomas and Gherig both had less demanding positions.

Then factor in his ability to stay bases and not many guys on this list can match up. That's fucking outstanding, And we're getting to watch it happen, which makes me wonder why Trout isn't a bigger deal.

Maybe a couple more years at this level of production and people will start getting interested? I hope so.

Still unproven. Right now, he's the Kershaw of offensive players. I think he went 1-13 or something in his last post-season appearance.

MLB will never suspend Trout for steroid use because he's the most recognizable figure in their sport that will be dead in 10-15 years and it would ruin the sport for their most well-known player to be a cheater

same reason why the NBA doesn't get LeBron for his steroid use

Baseball players don't get deals (the only big endorsement deals are shoe deals anyway) because baseball fans don't chimp out over "kicks."

>ethnic group that makes up 30% of the league

Mexicans make up 30% of the league?

I'm not talking about Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, and Cubans. They love baseball.

American sports fans who dislike baseball are typically Mexicans (odd, considering it is a popular sport there) or blacks (not enough showboating for their taste).

More to do with this fact than age:

>In 2008, 19.6 percent of all African Amer-icans over the age of 25 held a college degree. This figure has in-creased significantly from 13.8 percent in 1996 and 11.3 percent in 1990.

>Despite the good news, the data still shows that blacks must continue to travel a huge distance before they reach parity with white Americans in higher education.

>Overall, 32.6 percent of the non-Hispanic white population over the age of 25 holds a college degree compared to 19.6 percent of adult blacks. This percentage gap has remained steady in recent years.

As a Pirates fan I have to admit that Kris Bryant scares the fuck out of me like no other player right now every time he's up to bat.

He's on the Angel's, that's why. If he were a Sock or a Yanky or a Cub he'd be huge

>There are people who used to actually think this way.

Trout has done so much more on a worse team.
>>
>>74788208
>>74787585

Bryant is great, and he's young so we have no idea how high his ceiling is, but his first two years in the league are not better than Trout's.

Even comparing last year (age 24), and his second season for Bryant to Trout's first full season (age 20/21) Trout blows Bryant out of the water. Higher AVG, OPB, OBS, WAR about 3 points higher, Trout stole 49 bases compared to Bryant's 8. The only categories Bryant beat Trout were RBIs and Homers.

I'm talking about Bryant in 2016 vs Trout in 2012 if anyone wants to check.

Bryant is one of the best players in the game, no doubt, but Trout is a phenom.
>>
>>74786526
I think everyone hit the nail on the head. The Angels just suck, and as a result, most people just don't hype him up in the way that other players have been hyped up. Look at Kris Bryant. That dude has some name recognition, but he's the beneficiary of playing on a legendary team that just won the world series and being attractive lel.

Posey is great at what he does but he's not close to Mike Trout's level with the bat or on the basepaths.

Trout is a true 5 tool player. In fact when you check this list >>74786915
no other player can stand with Trout in all five aspects.

Power
Hitting for average
Speed on the basepaths
Defense
Throwing ability

Trout is the only guy here to possess all five attributes

I hope he keeps performing at this level and eventually people are forced to take notice. Most sports live and die with their stars. If Trout is clean, he could be the biggest boon to baseball in decades.
>>
>>74790493
one thing I'll say is Harper's mvp season was ridiculously good. Maybe better than any season trout has had.

he just doesn't have the outrageous year to year consistency trout does, but thats everybody.
>>
>>74791497

I think it depends on what you want. In Harper's MVP season he only stole 6 bases. Granted he hit 1.150 OPS which is higher than any single year Trout has had and his 42 home runs were more than any single Trout season (by 1).
But his next highest home run total was 24 which Trout has beaten every single full year he's played. And besides his MVP year he has never had a season OPS higher than .850, which Trout has never sunk to in a full season.

For the GOATs, consistency is key, which Trout has in spades.

Trout is just spectacular to watch. I wish he would get more coverage.
