The NHL is <50% Canadian. The next largest percentage with USA at 24% then Sweden at 9%. The NBA is 83% American, the next highest is Canada at around 3%.

Where as basketball and soccer. Here's a $10 ball. Go play in the local park

It's the same reason soccer is the most popular sport in Africa and south America. The parents can't afford to buy their kids gear for more complex sports. But they have balls and empty fields.. Here put down two Rocks and boom you got yourself a soccer field. Can't do the same with American football. You need protective gear, you need uprights, you need yard markers, you need officials, you need more than 3-5 people.
