He played with 8 starters all the time, when you consider the striker line up was

Matri, Quagliarella, Vucinic, Borriello, Giovinco, Bendtner, Anelka, LOLrente, Tevez

No wonder he couldn't score in UCL, no wonder he choked in Turkey, no surprise Buyern utterly obliterated him and the same happened with Benfica. The first year he made up for the lack of strikers (note: his top striker was Matri and he scored 10 fucking goals) by having the team run like crazy and expand the attack to the IFs as if he had a bunch of falsos nueves. When the gas ran out, Europe came, so he could no longer have his IFs constantly attack the area. IFs still scored a lot (namely Vidal and Pogba) but the rest slowly got phased out, and his game plan became predictable and vulnerable (mostly because they wouldn't score, see Benfica fiasco).

To put things in perspective: when he joined Juve he asked Robben and Ribery, they bought him Lichtsteiner and Asamoah.
