One of the greatest teams in history. How the fuck did they lose to Liverpool?
>>
They had an even better team in 2003 and they lost to a South American club

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003_Intercontinental_Cup

It's football, anything can happen
>>
the liverpool team were good but were greater than the sum of their parts in cup competitions thanks to benitez' tactics (e.g bringin hamann when getting fucked), a few good players GOATing it up, and enormous team spirit, not to mention a bit of luck.
>>
And Jerzy's double save, and we're back from the grave...

Football would be boring if the best team always won. It's nights like this that make it the best sport in the world.
>>
>>74539915
Tbh South America usually does better in these things until very recently. The Spanish Team which won both Euros with Iniesta, Xavi, Busquets, Fabregas, Xabi, Pique, Ramos, Puyol, Pedro, Villa, Torres and Casillas lost both confederations cup to South America
>>
>>74539958
You can't compare South American NTs to South American clubs

They got cocky after finishing the first half 3-0

What's the point of a competition if the best team loses?

>tfw USA won Fifa back in 2009 when we cucked Spain.

Tbf it really did look like Liverpoo were going to be raped 7-1 style by the end of the first half. I remember watching the first half and recall Crespo and Sheva missing like 10 fucking chances before putting in 3 goals.
>>
>>74539986

The best team on paper isn't always the best team on the night.

they aren't the best team if they lost

I was 10 years old then . I was a Milan fan.Watched the game with my cousin who was also a Milan fan. After the match I said to my cousin

It was amazing.Still a Liverpool fan.

Maldini, Stam, Cafu, Seedorf and Crespo were past their best and Dida was never good.

They also were prone to defensive collapses. A year before that final they got knocked out after winning the first leg 4-1
>>
>>74541802
>Crespo past his prime
Didn't stop him from scoring twice. Only other person off the tip of my head to do that in a CL final is Milito

Crespo, Shevchenko and Kaka are overrated shit to start with and Milan played narrow.

Finnan Garcia Traore and Riise are natural wide players who stopped Maldini and Cafu going forward forcing Gatusso and Seedorf to move wide and not protect Pirlo or run far up the pitch usually losing possession.

With Alonso controlling the game from deep, Gerrard simply had to use his strength against an unprotected Pirlo and pass wide or back to Alonso. He did a very good performance and the system worked out considering Nesta and Stam can't deal with crosses or counter attacks.

Tottenham used similar tactics against AC in 2011 which had Nesta, Gattusso, Pirlo and Seedorf who also failed to deal with deep lying playmakers, width and counter attacks.

Pic related.
>>
reminder that maldini handled the ball in the penalty area and it wasnt given. gerrards dive was given because of that.

>>
because of steven gerrard
>>
>>74539898
it was too unbalanced. gattuso had to hold up the defensive line by himself because seedorf was an attacking midfielder and pirlo was a ballerina.
When it worked it was great, but they were subject to crumbling from tiem to time.
That's why ancelotti fixed the team with ambrosini and gattuso as pirlo's bodyguards and 2 striker with 2 attacking midfielders
>>
They nicked it. It was luck
>>
Team A just wanted to win more
>>
came out cocky and with 0 concentration for the second half and before they even realized it they conceded
Liverpool got some life out of that goal and started going all out attacking and with some luck managed to equalize

Milan dominated the rest of the match as much as they dominated the first half too, but just couldn't score thanks to Dudek
after that, penalties are a lottery

it's genuinely the greatest choke in the history of the sport, they were superior in every aspect and played much better for 110 minutes out of 120, and still managed to lose
>>
>>74542831
wat
>>
>>74543135
Even taking that double save into account, Dudek didn't do nearly as much as Carragher did that night. The lad's work rate was ridiculous.

And Milan couldn't dominate nearly as much after Liverpool equalised as they did in the first half. They still dominated somewhat but Hamann's presence curbed much of it. Still can't fathom why Rafa shipped him off.
>>
Does anyone actually, besides scousers and the Irish, like Liverpool?
>>
>>74539898
In all seriousness, that's probably the most STACKED team in terms of names other than the Madrid galacticos of 2003.

South Americans tend to care about those glorified friendlies way more than the European sides.
>>
>>74543307
Barcelona and Chelsea were better teams than Milan.

Every single time, just move to europe indio. Stop sucking their cocks from here

If they lost it's because they weren't as good as the other team, simple as that.

The retard here would be you

And there's no self hatred, it's just reality. Even today, the Club World Cup isn't prestigious, but hey, if you want to pretend it is, go ahead. We'll just sit here and laugh at you.

Barcelona had Ronaldinho at his prime. He could take a goal out of his ass.

Chelsea, in that season conceded only 15 goals in the league.

Barcelona and Chelsea was THE biggest rivalry in the CL for a while. I remember some Barcelona players saying they felt more of a rivalry with Chelsea than with Real.
>>
>>74539915

only on penalties tho
>>
>>74539986

This is why the league exists. Cup competitions are prone to what you're describing, but league competitions test consistency over a much grander scale.
>>
>>74543401
You're looking at seasons in isolation though.

That AC Milan team has players that will go down as some of the best in history in their positions.

None of Chelsea's would, possibly Robben only.
>>
>>74543401
same could be said for prime Kaka
i mean come on, every player except Crespo, Dida and maybe Stam (who were still world class at the time) is a top 10 player in their respective role in the last 25 years
it was stacked like hell, although they didn't always live up to their names performance wise (they didn't win any trophy that season after all)
>>
>>74543401
Barca in 2004-05 still hadn't fully recovered from the Gaspart era (maybe 80-90%), and they did lose to Chelsea in the RO16. I think Milan then would've spanked them too.
>>
>>74543389
>>74543389
Cech, Terry, Carvalho, Gallas (in that particular season, he was world class), Makelele, Lampard, Drogba.

>>74543442
Yes, OP is asking how did they lose.
They were not in their prime anymore. Maldini was 37 years old. Cafu was 35 years old.

Makelele is the greatest DM ever. Maldini is the greatest leftback and Cafu could claim to be one of the best.
Other than that, no one there could claim to be in a best ever discussion.
>>
>>74543463
Kaka was nowhere as good as prime Ronaldinho.
>>
>>74543502
Shevchenko one of the best European strikers and definitely within Serie A.

Nesta and Pirlo are definitely one of the best players in their positions of all time.

Could you name 25 better in their position?
>>
>>74543533
Absolute PRIME Kaka was close to Dinho.

I was at the 2007 game vs Utd at OT.

I've never seen a player destroy a decent defence in CL game like that before.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NabwX1TYx_I
>>
>>74543273
I honestly want to like them, but they keep embarrassing themselves against relegation fodder and I can't take them seriously for it.
>>
>>74543556
better version

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTjsvvB3_xY
>>
>>74543540
If you take this kind of standard, then the likes of Terry, Lampard and Drogba would also qualify.

When I think of "among the greatest ever", it is players like Baresi, Maldini, Makelele, Messi.
>>
man that liverpool team was awful besides alonso and slippy g

Dinho was a joy to watch but he was almost an entertainer

I'd take 1999-2003 Ronaldinho over prime Kaká.
Kaká was overrated because he had the pretty boy look.
>>
>>74543836
Kaka wasn't overrated though.

He was GOAT for two seasons then injuries fucked him.
>>
>>74543861
34yo Zidane completely outplayed 24yo Kaká. And that's when the latter was supposed to be "GOAT". Explain that.
>>
>>74543533
ronaldinho is one of the most overrated players ever. He was flashy as hell but he wasn't more technically gifted than many other great players, and his style was often more appearance than substance.
Prime kaka was leagues above prime ronaldinho

he's just flashier but doesn't have bettter technical skills and there are plaers more efective than him and with a bigger inpact on a game.

but since he loves to showboat people tend to overrate him
