Was anyone else a little disappointed with the boxing last night? The Haye undercard was dire and the main event was just bizarre, and while I was happy that Thurman won I didn't think he gave the breakout performance that was needed on such a big stage. I wish he'd gone out in at least the 12th and put a stamp on it

the only thing that gets me out of bed is the thought of getting down to the gym and hitting my routine hard as fuck getting in as much prep as i can and keeping my current form (im in the best shape physically and mentally that iv ever been in and i know its inevitably gonna take a decline if i have other life commitments)

for what its worth iv had both carl froch and his ex trainer rob mcracken (now AJ's trainer) watch and compliment me on my technique which has motivated me more than anything to keep at it but its fucking tough for amateurs trying to break through and i know my chances are pretty much fucked if i get a full time job

Anybody got a webm of Paulie getting KO?
>>
>>74514353

The Haye undercard was completely lifeless because everybody at the O2 was only there for the main event and it was just bad match ups. Poor show from matchroom.

The Haye fight was entertaining but just a fluke where the stars aligned. Haye was ring rusty and threw away the first 2 rounds trying to force a KO he couldn't deliver. After 5 rounds he was winning the fight 3 rounds to 2 and would of won a decision if not for the achilles injury and then Bellew took 5 rounds to knock him out. Credit to Bellew for having a chin but it was special circumstances under which he won and now he's number 2 heavyweight on boxrec.

The Thurman fight, Thurman looked pretty good at the start but the fight and atmosphere really fell flat as it went on. It wasn't a breakout performance to solidify him as number 1.

No way, Bellew slipped a few shots, someone posted one of the cards, Haye won 2,3,4,5.

Bellew wasn't winning at all, the only reason Haye stayed fighting after the injury was; he could still win on points.

How the hell could anyone say Haye was gassed? He fought half the fight as a cripple and still tagged Bellew regularly.

Bellew is trying to play down that he beat a cripple by saying that Haye's injury wasn't that bad, and also he's now complaining that he broke his hand.

Bellew is a fucking moron, that coming from a Bellew fan.

Last night confirmed to me how Britain has eclipsed US boxing.

The production values of both shows were world's apart. Admittedly, one was a PPV card and one was a domestic TV broadcast. But everything was better on the Sky card. The atmosphere for starters was appallingly flat for Thurman-Garcia, not equating for the booing in the mid rounds. Fans are only taking their seats for the main event, they've had nothing to drink, you have to go about 10 rows back for people to be jumping around and shouting, the ring is always surrounded by lifeless suits.

Look at the difference in ringwalks. That spectacle is what makes boxing kind of romantic, in the States they just walk in with their corner nonchalantly now. The Sky card it takes a good 10 minutes, everything blacks out, the suspense builds...there's no way we should be beating Americans at this, bravado is their thing.

That should have been the biggest bout in US boxing since Mayweather vs. Pacquiao, AGAIN they missed the chance to actually leave an emotional impact on the casual viewer.

also the Thurman Garcia fight was way better. Bellew Haye was only a half-serious fight with a good entertainment value. A money fight which turned into something funny and weird at the same time.

>>74517684
No, I'm right.

That's a unification bout, in a glamour division, with two fighters who've been built FOR YEARS. It was an A Grade match-up on paper, on US domestic television in prime-time. No NFL, no NBA to compete with, it was there for everybody and It HAD to deliver, and again they fell short.

Have vs. Bellew was a C+ matchup at best, at yet Sky Sports milked it for absolutely everything they could, everyone (including fans) put their absolute soul into it and we got one of the most dramatic (although not technically brilliant) fights I can remember. That stuff sticks with you, the atmosphere, the spectacle, Haye fighting on one leg, then being sent through the ropes by a massive underdog. The narrative just worked.
>>
>>74517803

I agree. The reality is, the US has more boxing talent than the UK, but they can't seem to get it right and capitalize.

Why can't they build the atmospheres that the UK does? Why can't they generate the hype?

Why did Haye-Bellew sell out 20k seats in a day, and Thurman-Garcia took months to sell 15k?

Im genuinely curious on how to answer these questions.
>>
>>74517749
Definitely. It was absolutely dead for the undercard. Even their rendition of Sweet Caroline was half-hearted lmao
>>
>>74517803
>It was an A Grade match-up on paper

Not really. It was the #3 vs the #7

Kovalev vs Ward was an A grade match-up
>>
>>74518076
>Even their rendition of Sweet Caroline was half-hearted lmao

>>
>>74518059
Americans went off boxing when they stopped being the best at it.

I lived in the USA for the Lance Armstrong, Tiger Woods and Williams sister years. If you avoided the South, you would be firmly of the impression that cycling, golf and tennis were the only sports in the USA.

They only watch when they win and when they don't they will abandon it in favour of something else. It's not that they avoid watching (though I imagine many would), their networks and companies actually avoid any sport where Americans aren't winning.
>>
>>74516613
>tfw furymode

Based
>>
>>74518148

Doesn't answer the question, why 2 american champions couldn't generate any hype, atmosphere or significant media attention.
>>
>>74518179
It probably got a few million viewers

And they're not real champions anyway. In another era that would've been a NABF title fight, not a world unification. It's good that it happened but it was just contender vs contender. Next Thurman needs to fight the winner of Brook vs Spence, and then the winner of that needs to face Pacquiao (or maybe Crawford if he gets to Pacquiao first). Only through this process of elimination do we get true super-fights. Boxing only seems weak in recent years because these fights haven't been coming off in a timely manner
>>
>>74518135
>for a serious boxing fan

There has to be some give and take with this, at some point you were a new fan also, sports need mass markets to sell to.

Whether you like it or not, boxing needs 18-35 year old males who travel in groups of 6, go to the fights and drink. Or you'll just end up like badminton or fencing where you're waiting for 5 hours for a reply on your sports biggest internet forum where you can't post a reply without a pixelated avatar.

Because it's plainly obvious that neither of them are anywhere near the level of Mayweather or Pacquiao.

When you watched them late 2000's Pacquiao fights, you just knew you were watching something special. I feel like with the current crop of Welterweights, I have to be convinced they're special.
>>
>>74518245
Yeah but at what cost? Last night's card was closer to WWE than to the sweet science. Manufactured mandrama, past-prime fighters getting primetime coverage, fans who are only there for one fighter, foxy boxing as the lead support, pundits who actively misinform the viewer... It was a joke

I just want competitive fights and some dignity from the broadcasters

Here's the thing, what are the alternatives?

Circus fights happen, it's part of boxing. Like chocolate, not a staple of your diet but the odd treat now and then. But you know what, I think you get more out of something like this than the alternative. What's the alternative for Bellew? Fight Denis Ledbedev or somebody? Do you really think Haye was going to fight someone worthy on his own accord also?

People give Matchroom a lot of shit for being dramatic. But they get people involved, they bring fights to areas that never would get them otherwise (Campbell/McDonnell in Hull, Bellew in Liverpool, Burns in Glasgow, Warrington in Leeds, etc.). You're going to get those 'legit' fights too, Brook vs. Spence is exactly that.

Watching Tony fucking Bellew putting David Haye through the ropes was hilarious. I was going mental, along with everybody else out that night.
>>
The bellew-haye fight was pretty embarrassing for British boxing desu

Part of the issue with the atmosphere is that Brooklyn is Garcia's de facto home turf, he's fought there quite a few times including his controversial wins over Peterson and Herrera. The crowd was very pro-Garcia and the energy fizzled as he started losing rounds in a pretty tactical match.
>>

>Here's the thing, what are the alternatives?

They could still make Haye vs Bellew and even put it on PPV, but they need to throw us a bone and (a) put some good fights on the undercard and (b) get some pundits who do their homework and won't constantly insult our intelligence. The budget is disproportionately spent on marketing to the detriment of the actual product, like the sporting equivalent of a piece of shit blockbuster movie. With the money they paid Michael Buffer they probably could have afforded a British title fight for the undercard, for example

Pretty sure this is bait, but the biggest issue is that all the fights have been gobbled up by PPV and premium cable channels which have been made almost totally irrelevant by online movie streaming services.

Most Americans watch league sports like the NFL, NBA etc., and college sports are king in the South where very few states have major sports franchises. People like Lance Armstrong and Tiger Woods got huge endorsement deals, but that's not at all reflective of the popularity of their sports. Even in Armstrong's heyday nobody watched cycling.
>>
>>74518582
>(a) put some good fights on the undercard
I agree. I'd have like to have seen at a better co-main push everything down. That said, I can't think of any fight in particular that would fit into the schedule that doesn't, or can't, merit it's own show (like Murray vs. Rosado for example).
>(b) get some pundits who do their homework
I don't mind Sky's broadcasting. They are biased, but I like Adam Smith and Malinaggi. Froch is a bit slow but there's a homely quality about him I like. Nelson and that woman they had bore me a little.
>The budget is disproportionately spent on marketing to the detriment of the actual product, like the sporting equivalent of a piece of shit blockbuster movie
And I have absolutely zero problem with this whatsoever for reasons I said here >>74517640

Theatrics are absolutely an integral part of the sport and the romance associated with it. I'd rather have that instead of an additional Buglioni fight and the whole thing looking like PBC or a Warren promotion.
>>
>>74518717
>That said, I can't think of any fight in particular that would fit into the schedule that doesn't, or can't, merit it's own show (like Murray vs. Rosado for example).

Well there are dozens out there and it's the match maker's job to find them. There was so much dead airtime between fights last night that they desperately needed just one more good fight, as well as better opponents for Davies and Eggington

>I don't mind Sky's broadcasting. They are biased, but I like Adam Smith and Malinaggi. Froch is a bit slow but there's a homely quality about him I like. Nelson and that woman they had bore me a little.

Paulie is the only one who provides any analysis and Ed Robinson is the only one who seems to actually follow the sport in depth, though I don't think I've seen Robinson on TV yet this year. Nelson is just atrocious on every level but he seems to be the guy they fancy as their Gary Lineker for some reason
>>

>Theatrics are absolutely an integral part of the sport and the romance associated with it. I'd rather have that instead of an additional Buglioni fight and the whole thing looking like PBC or a Warren promotion.

A Buglioni fight was the saving grace of the last Joshua PPV

Warren's York Hall show the Friday before last proves that you can provide plenty of drama on a shoestring budget with the right match making. His scheduled shows so far this year shit on Hearn's in general, actually

Because Haymon made these guys obsolete. Garcia's been on borrowed time and isn't really respected by boxing fans because of it and he's never really been good to watch at all.
Thurman has also been inactive and has also fought nobody of note and in the few fringe contenders he faced, he was badly rocked in those fights.

So while Haymon held out all this time to "finally" match up his two guys and show the world what PBC is all about, the truth is these guys have more or less disappeared from serious boxing consciousness for years now. You can't find Salkas and Bundus fight after fight and expect people to really care after a while. Not only this, fighting weak opps dulls the fighting spirit which is why I knew going in this would be a bad fight. Neither guy is used to tough fights, just easy money for bums. Nobody wanted to get hit and it showed.

>>74518936
Yeah, Thurman's last two fights have been good but it's a joke that they were a year apart. A young fighter like him should be taking two to three good fights every year like clockwork. Consistency is the key to building a good brand
>>
>>74518869
>There was so much dead airtime between fights last night that they desperately needed just one more good fight.
I agree about the dead airtime, although I think that's more to do with mismanagement of the schedule and timings. Again, you could have an additional fight, but I'm not sure what worthy co-main's where actually out there given the booked schedule for the first half of the year, and the fact that you're still working with a predominantly British selection pool.

>>74518921
>Warren's York Hall show the Friday before last proves that you can provide plenty of drama on a shoestring budget with the right match making. His scheduled shows so far this year shit on Hearn's in general, actually
Give it a rest Frank.

On what planet is Smith vs. Williams, Flanagan vs. Petrov, Warrington vs. Martinez and Langford vs Khurtsidze better than fucking Joshua vs. Klitschko, Brook vs. Spence, Haye vs. Bellew, Linares vs. Crolla II and Murray vs. Rosado?
>>
>>74519065
Williams vs Smith, Flanagan vs Petrov, Tete vs Villaneuva, Catterall vs Gethin and showcase fights for DuBois, Barrett and Heffron are all on the same bill. That absolutely shits on last night's Sky show

And then the Leicester show with Nurse, Langford, Smyle and Singh will end up being much better viewing than Hearn's Hull show from the other week too, book it
>>
>Again, you could have an additional fight, but I'm not sure what worthy co-main's where actually out there given the booked schedule

Exactly the problem. No need to make McDonnell vs Vargas its own card, put it on this instead.
>>
>>74519173

Williams vs Smith is the only big fight he's made in the UK this year. Boy Jones Jr was 1.05 odds mismatch that turned out exciting.
>>
>>74519173
That's a very very good domestic show, granted. However, one card does not mean you have a better, or more relevant schedule. Whilst Queensbury fails to sell out Manchester Arena, Matchroom are going to put 90,000 in Wembley, crown the biggest star in British sports, and then have that packaged to the US and Germany for huge worldwide audiences.

>>74519220
>No need to make McDonnell vs Vargas its own card, put it on this instead.
No. The value of local boxing is a huge reason why British boxing has got so much better. I'm actually from East Yorkshire, I can't make it to the O2 on a weekend. But once in a while, I get to see McDonnell, Campbell, Coyle etc down the road, it gives me guys to root for and fills out the schedule, we get more boxing on more weekends.

I'm sure people in Manchester, Glasgow, Liverpool, Leeds, Birmingham etc. feel the same way.
>>
>>74519285
>Boy Jones Jr was 1.05 odds mismatch that turned out exciting.

It was good match making. He was a solid step up from Jones' last opponent without being a ridiculous leap, like when Allen got suddenly chucked in with Whyte and then Ortiz or when Edwards got chucked in with Casimero. Just turned out that Poxton fought the fight of his life and Jones Jr's flaws were worse than most people judged. Warren's cards are full of fights like that because he and his match makers know British boxing inside out

Bellew is 1 or 2 fights away from retirement anyway, it's all about maximising the money now and losing to Breidis certainly wouldn't be doing that. Parker and then a Haye rematch once he's recovered seems distinctly possible.

Dunno what the deal is with Wangek, but taking odd nicknames is part of Thai boxing culture. >>
>>74528408

>>

Didn't the Whyte one do over 600k?

I wonder if AJ's numbers against Wlad will do more than Haye and Fury's. Maybe he's not as big a draw as we think. Haye and Fury are much better salesmen, for sure

400k is the figure all over the internet

Will be interesting to place the Joshua vs Klitschko fight, these are the rumoured numbers I can recall from memory, most of which are debated heavily. No idea what Haye vs Klitschko was, and obviously Bruno vs Lewis would probably be up there around number 1 if it happened this century.

1. Hatton vs Mayweather - 1.2m
2. Froch vs Groves 2 - 900k
3. Lewis vs Tyson - 800k
3. Haye vs Harrison - 800k
4. Hatton vs Pacquiao - 750k
5. Bruno vs Tyson 660k
6. Haye vs Valuev - 600k
>>
>>74529778
According to this article (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-13943609) Haye vs Valuev did 469,000 and Haye vs Harrison only did 223,000
>>
>>74529931
Haye vs Wlad did 1,143,000 and Fury vs Wlad did 545,000 according to the same resource (barb.co.uk)
>>
>>74529993
It also says Joshua vs Whyte was 660,000

But these numbers are weekly so could be skewed if there were any other Sky Box Office events that week, e.g. WWE or something

He wants that Haye rematch. Must not being lying about the numbers

Would love a two-legged Haye to smash Bellew and ride off into the sunset with his millions. He's done at world level.
>>
>>74532289

Either 20th or 27th not confirmed
>>
>>74532610
If Haye smashes Bellew in a rematch there's no way he's retiring. He needs/loves money too much
>>
Haye is a level above Bellew, he only boxed like an idiot at the start because he knew he couldn't put weight on his foot and underestimated Bellew. That said, the guy is shot. He's injury prone and he's carrying too much weight to be as fast as he was and will tire faster. Joshua would smash him and I think the ship has sailed on big fights, he may never recover from that achilles injury.
>>
>>74532963

Yep. He thought he could take Bellew out with the injury and horribly misjudged it. But then he couldn't really pull out - if he'd done that he'd have pulled out of 4 of his last 6 (Charr, Fury x2, Bellew).

How many times did he start talking about a comeback between Chisora and de Mori? They never came to anything because he kept getting injured.

Anyway, absolute fucking warrior in the end. I didn't think he had that in him after winning the titles and earning the millions.
>>
Can Bellew win a HW title?
>>
>>74533222

If Bellew won a title against either Parker or Wilder that would be more of a shock than George Foreman becoming world champion at 45. They could just make his life the storyline for Rocky 8.

Klitschko is fighting only 2 weeks before that, and he's in with AJ. I'm thinking half the timing is because he knows Haye is out the equation, Wilder is likely to go for Parker later this year so a warm up fight puts Tyson in the picture for a big payday against the winner of Klitschko/Joshua

Big heavyweights have become a Thing over the years because of shorter bouts, smaller gloves, and the unlimited amounts of holding that fighters are allowed to do these days. I don't think he should be dismissed due to his size, certain types of fighters are successful under different rules and it doesn't make sense to evaluate anyone outside the context of their own era.

But that being said, I really don't think Dempsey stacks up against many of the other great heavyweights even when you take all that into account. Willard was one of the worst lineal champions ever, his title reign was weak, and his career is filled with controversial fights.

I don't think he was a bad fighter, just a free-swinging type that fit right in with the romantic notions of the 20s. Dempsey's benefited from a lot of nostalgia.

>"UAE would not happen until November, if it happens at all, but I doubt it will," Arum said, noting that doing the fight in late June or July, after the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which was proposed, was also not possible because it would have taken place at an outdoor stadium and it would be far too hot in the desert during the summer.

>BBBoC suspended Tyson Fury from boxing for almost 2 years
>instead of having his fight with Klitschko ruled a NC and have his belts given back to the original champ, all the belts are everywhere

what the fuck

>Muslims ruining yet another thing

Suprise, suprise
>>

Why would it be ruled NC when he failed the drug test nearly a year later? Or am I remembering wrong? Also the fight was in Germany, so they wouldn't have the power to rule it No contest, would they?
>>
>>74554015
I remember reading that Fury tested positive BEFORE the fight and it wasn't until months after the fight was over that it was leaked. And even then, BBBoC never actually confirmed Fury's positive tests, which is weird, because BBBoC is known for harsh and swift punishments.

I'm not sure how different boxing boards work, but I assumed that if a fighter is tested positive by any 3rd party, it would affect them across the board.

Both Tyson and Hugie pissed hot for steroids in early 2015 and it was kept quiet. (Tyson) Fury's current suspension is the one he received after pulling out of the Klitschko rematch. Some serious politics going on behind the scenes.

So true.

A biker in my city just went to jail for assaulting some like 13 year old kid and his dad.

The next day i was at a bar and some guys were wearing "Free (the guy who went to jail)" shirts.

why is the usa the best place to test your skills? fighters get weeded out quick fast if they arent legit. as for the uk, because of the fans & the money those fans bring in, theyre far to comfortable and get lost in their own worlds.

It's over la, Brits and Eastern Europeans are exposing you left right and centre, just look at your atrocious amateur program.

Billy Two Punches gets on his bike and calls it boxing, meanwhile anyone over 168lb can barely move out of their own weight, American heavyweights are Bum City.
