/sp/ has pretty much become unbrowseable apart from NFL gamethreads. Nobody even bothers making gamethreads for other American sports now unless it's the playoffs. These days it's literally just 85% non-American (awful) sports threads, then shit general threads that are just tripfag circlejerks, and then finally Patriots clickbait threads which have been spammed for so long that they go entirely ignored except for the one autist who bumps them every 8 hours.

Sucks because this is my home board, and I always check it out first, but these days find myself spending maybe 3 minutes tops before heading over to /tv/.

I don't know how to fix it, or if it's even "fixable" or worth fixing, but it just sucks considering what it used to be.

There's an extremely popular sports radio station in Dallas where the fan favorite voice (Gordo) is a guy who doesn't give a shit about sports and hardly knows anything about them. What steps do we need to take to ensure a better board?

/sp/ is overall in a pretty healthy state. Things got pretty bad in 2015, but luckily the jannies have softened their foot on the ban pedal.

At this point, the biggest issue with /sp/ is variety of discussion. There's no point in trying to get rid of generals - they're here to stay folks. But there's still room for interesting content. There was a thread a few days back on the worst injuries in sports. Maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but I found it quite interesting. About once a month we'll get a decent sports injuries thread. In contrast, we get several ">I rate Zidane" threads every single day.

Now, don't get me wrong, I still think it can be funny. It's a classic /sp/ meme that earned it's stay. But have some creativity, folks. Even if we're going to recycle old ideas, at least keep it fresh.

The easiest way to do this is, of course, being even more lenient on moderation. In it's prime, /sp/ is an online sports bar where anything goes. The banter on /sp/ will always be top-tier. We should embrace this. You can help out by making an effort into creating interesting threads, instead of the same old ">4-1-2-3" gimmick.

The period right before /pol/ was made was the peak. Not because /pol/ is bad, but because all the funnest parts of /pol/ were on /sp/ by default. There was hardly any post cooldown, so Gamethreads were at their peak. These 2 combined to make gamethreads for current events. Any major HAPPANAN got several game threads. There were no generals either, since generals were a post-catalog thing. Every game from every team got at least 1 game thread, and anything nationally televised got 5+. I think the Mars rover landing was the beginning of the end for /sp/. That was when /sp/ was indisputably GOAT all across 4chan. I lost the screen caps on my old comp, but it would be nice if someone could post it. Ever since then, /sp/ has been on a downward slide.

Not only do they complain about moderating /sp/, they also do a shitty job of it.

The CP bot is what ruined /sp/. A bunch of people left because /sp/ used to be a board you could browse at work, but the fact you could be browsing any game thread or catalog and could easily get fired because how common CP was people just didn't have time.

I bet /sp/ has one of the highest mobile poster rates out of any board.

While this is true for many things it clearly is not the case for /sp/. /sp/ in 2011 had a thread for everything. Power rankings, eventb owls, tv/video game streams, car chases, why threads, music threads, feel threads, history threads, random shit like quidditch threads and Ron Artest chatroom trolling threads, sports threads without endless generals.

Compare it to /sp/ now. Everyone split off into their generals and anything off topic is deleted. Every thread back then went to 300 posts, now this place is dead.

This has to be true. Getting a smartphone for the first time in 2012 was such a game changer for me. I could watch sports with people while posting on /sp/ at the same time. Truly revolutionary for me at the time.

2. Officially exile all generals on /sp/, including /nfl/, /bundes/, /epl/, /3pm/, /HEEM/, /tennis/, Eternal Arsenal, /nba/, /afl/, /nrl/, /cric/, /F1/, /mls/+/ayy/, /hoc/, /mlb/, /rug/, /trb/ and any others I missed, out to /spg/. Don't go full /vg/: Keep the post limit at 500.
3. Rename /sp/ - Sports to /sp/ - Sports Bar
4. Put up a sticky officially designated /sp/ as having a "sports bar" atmosphere. This includes general sports discussion, sports banter, match discussion, power rankings, and match threads for non-sporting events like the legendary car chaseb owls of 2011-2013.
5. Keep moderation to a bare minimum. Only delete generals, illegal shit, WWE shit, /asp/ shit and porn spam.
6. Add sound to webms and increase file size. Would be great for webm threads and match thread updates.

I believe it's fine that we can talk about matters revolving around sports ; transexuals MtF are a concern for female sports and it's something we should be able to discuss.
I know it's a lot of work, but what we should regulate are posts, not threads.
