The sprinting sports may be pretty simple, but at the 400m and over strategy starts to come into play, even more so for team relays. It's a pretty individualist sport as well, so it attracts a lot of philosopher-types. That is why the ancient Greeks glorified track and field so much.
Football, at least men's football, could have strategy but devolves into idiots striving in vain for personal glory and fucking it up for themselves. Women's football is much more entertaining because they actually think through it and act as a team.
