They are absolutely tied to the success of their high school football team as that is the only thing that brings in revenue to the school and therefore their small town. By investing in sports in a sport heavy culture you can draw in not only the talent but the better students who enjoy sports, which raises the grades of the school as a whole, which means more state and federal funding, which means the school can invest more in its students, which means they go on to get better jobs, which means they can invest more in the community, which raises the mean income level of the town, which brings in more outside business, and so on and so on. You could argue that is a backwards system that relies entirely on the success of the team and can be incredibly unsuccessful (see $60 milliom dollar stadium that became decrepit after 2 years and bankrupted nearly everything) but there is literally no other way for these schools to get money in areas that do not have the resources to allocate to public school in any meaningful way. AP Economics teacher here. Teaching upper-level students that have ambition, especially the kids that play sports and have high GPA's, is actually the easiest thing in the world. The worst part of the job is making the final hard enough so the college I'm doing the dual credit program through doesn't think I'm just fucking around. I also prefer teaching these public school kids to the autists or frou-frou kids at private schools.
