It's not fun anymore when the local teams are genuinely good and do regularly win championships. Further, Boston is a smaller and rather "specific" part of the country that the average American, even the average American living on the Eastern Seaboard, can't identify with. These teams have been popularized/intentionally marketed in media for decades, and in two cases, they come from "THE. BIG. CITY." which some people like. Boston is a weird A-/B town, not an alpha-dick A+++ town like NY.

Admittedly, in recent decades, Boston has started winning sports that are not basketball, or hockey by dint of being only one of six teams.

Also, people not in New York shouldn't identify with the Yankees, period. I know that some areas without teams of their own do so (just as they default to Cowboys for the above reason) but in the Yankees' case they're wrong for doing so. If you live outside of the New York area and you're a Yankees fan, you're a bad person.

Chicago is a way for midwesterners to live vicariously through a large and actually relevant (Chicago is a more important city in the United States than Boston, murder spikes and colonial history notwithstanding) city without being forced to go out to the coasts. I myself casually bandwagoned the Cubs these past two seasons (that game seven was /crazy/). Chicago also has a long history of having been the country's second most populous city, hence "second city", but of course this hasn't been the case for decades. Still, it's third banana behind LA just in terms of city proper population.
