i dont think that had to do with teams thinking about the end result, specially since not all 3rd place teams qualified and you did need points(and goals) go through. more about the general way teams are playing with bigger teams focusing on possession and smallers ones not wanting to fight a battle they know they'd lose. plus some of the best matches in the tournament were draws. goalless draws are a bigger problem but there were like 4 of those in the entire tournament.
