The way I understand it, Red Bull and Renault have co-ownership of the 2016 engine. Does that mean Red Bull will be developing the engine themselves, without Renault, in their Milton Keynes factory?
>>
>>63362904
> Does that mean Red Bull will be developing the engine themselves, without Renault, in their Milton Keynes factory?
Yes.
Supposedly Renault with supply the V6 internal combustion engine and Red Bull will develop and implement their own entire ERS and related components at their Milton Keynes facilities.

However, I still haven't seen a legit source confirming this rumour.
>>
>>63362904
>>63362967
Let's say the rumor is true, what would happen with the token system in place?
Do Renault upgrades not apply to the supplied block to RB? or are the tokens for ERS and ICE separate? i.e. RB upgrades ERS with their own ERS tokens, and they get the ICE from Renault with whatever upgrades they put in place, regardless of the tokens used by one or the other.
>>
>>63363182
Isn't the update for next weekend an ICE update? Then I suppose most of the tokens for the winter will be used on ERS.
>>
>>63363182
I guess they either can't use token upgraded ICE from Renault at all or simply can't use any upgrades that will put them over the 12 token limit. Not even the FIA are incompetent enough to allow Red Bull to cheat the token system.

Texas' Sunday morning qualifying

>>63364075
Silverstone had the best fight at the front. It had Williams getting their great start, messing up their pit strategy, Williams losing the chance to get a 1-2 by not letting Bottas past Massa, and Lewis' pitting for intermediates while everyone else was running slicks, thus winning the race.

Bottas had worse pace than Massa on the primes and atrocious pace on the inters. They would've lost to Mercedes regardless.

The only reason he was even faster in the first stint was because Silverstone was the first race of the season where the dirty air didn't matter much, and Bottas had DRS almost all race. Massa would've easily repassed him if Bottas had gone past.

Silverstone, Sochi, Malaysia, maybe Singapore, are probably the top contenders for a distant third best race of the season (after Hungary and the USA, which I think everyone can agree on). I think Bahrain is pretty underrated, too; Kekberg was actually a little aggressive though it didn't help him much, and it was probably the last time Gimi seemed to give a shit.

And Monaco is worth mentioning, but only for Mad Max's live onboard crash and the ensuing hilarity from Mercedes fucking Hamilton up.

i think that red bull will take the current renault block and develop it with ilmor. red bull tried to get mario illien to help renault but renault were not keen on his input.

> or are the tokens for ERS and ICE separate?

the tokens are separate. each part or subsystem of the power unit has a token value, so the token system prevents a whole power unit replacement.

in the best case, red bull are a new engine manufacturer and can use an extra power unit over the competition before grid penalties kick in.

By ditching the current hybrids, or by opening up the regs to allow more than one type of PU? The current engines are technologically bretty good, it would be stupid to completely ditch them.

Pretty sure the driver code they're referring to is showing shame or apologizing, even just talking to the other driver after you caused a wreck. Moreso if you intentionally did it. Something that Logano never does, but instead gloats about it and never believes he can be wrong. Shit, when wrecked Hamlin and put him in the hospital with a broken back, he got out of the car and said he deserved it.

The fuck kind of driver code is that? The kind that pisses off any kind of racing driver. No one wants to admit it, but everyone knows Logano had it coming in Martinsville.

Now shut the fuck up about circlecircus in an F1 thread and post your favorite livery.
>>
>>63381308

According to Auto Motor und Sport they probably won't use the Indycar engine as base because it's just too weak and manufactureres spent a fortune on the V6 engines.
Instead they want a V6 or V8 biturbo based on the current V6 block with more kers, up 140kg of fuel and cap it at 8-12 million €.

No mentioning of Ferrari and their possible veto.

>By ditching the current hybrids, or by opening up the regs to allow more than one type of PU?

Allowing more than one type of power unit.

> The current engines are technologically bretty good, it would be stupid to completely ditch them.

But they are too expensive, they haven't provided cost reductions and they haven't provided better racing.

The current rules slow equalisation between manufacturers and discourage new entrants.

> cost cap

The cost cap is on the alternate power unit.

Friday and Saturday were hot as hell so the chilly Sunday morning got me surprised.

Sunday: clouds everywhere with even a bit of rain. Got there at 7-8 am to get a GOAT place and I managed to sit over the grid at the main straight with a fucking general admission ticket. First we watched a tractor cunt race no kidding. Then the feature races happened. It was pretty based. Then the driver parade on a truck. The f1 race lead up started. Ted (and probably cameraman Pete) on the grid, DC, the drivers remembering Jules, a heli with the Hungarian flag and stuff. Warmup happened, then Felipe baby fucked up and they went for another one. Then that amazing Ferrari start happened with Lewlew fucking up at the chicane. It was almost like in Monza with all the tifosi who started clapping every time a ferrari went by. After Hulk crashed came the SC through the pits right in front of us. After the race the podium was also in sight. Remember this wasn't a grandstand. and we still had such a view at the track from turn 11 to the main straight and even a bit of the chicane over the woods and the pits with 2 tvs on top of the paddock

His saving grace is his technical insight, but his enthusiasm and passion feels fake. He's not like Murray, who was genuinely excited, standing up all the time. He's like that one football commentator that always calls things "magisterial" and shit like that.

It's too forced, and shit like that needs to be reserved for properly incredible moments. If everything is worth shouting over then nothing is legitimately special.

He simply isn't good enough. By the end of 2011, even a slow Schumacher was more than a match for him, and he should've been outscored in 2012 as well.

Against the likes of the current top 3, he just doesn't have the pace or the aggression needed unless he has a much better car, and at this rate he's never going to get a better car than all of them at the same time.

See this is probably a highly biased view, but I felt that Schumi 2011+ was of a much higher caliber, therefore I rate Rosberg higher, but then again it's my view based on my view of Schumacher.

That being said, he's got speed, and I think as a package I'd put him near Hamilton, I really do think post Spa being booed must have really fucked with him. I'd like to think being married and having a kid will give him more self worth, and then he may go more aggressive. If he was more ruthless, I really think he could unbalance Hamilton, look at how upset he got in Mexico, he didn't do a good enough job this year, but next year I hope we see a change, either that or Vettel in the Ferrari for WDC.
>>
>>63446918
He lacks the last streak of ruthless killer instinct and self belief that separates a very fast driver from a champion.

Poop Senna has him under his thumb and has won the teammate head game ever since Spa. If Rossberg had got just some taste of positive reinforcement from that incident - which in retrospect, looking at how the end of this season unfolded, I truly believe was accidental - then he might have been more inclined to play hardball with Hamilton but as it is he doesn't have the self-belief to do it.

At Suzuka, and then at Texas *because* of Suzuka, he should never have let Hamilton run him wide - he should have turned in enough to force a collision "deniably", taken them both out of race-win contention, protested innocently to the team and race control that it was inadvertent - but told Hamilton plainly and simply on the walk back "Try it again and see what happens, fuck face".

Instead, he did the gentlemanly thing, and I don't see him beating Lewis from this point forward. Which is a shame, because Lewis has given new depths to the meaning on the word cunt.

>>63446918
Nah, Schumacher improved considerably after 2010, but with the testing ban and his neck issues he was never going to be the same after the comeback. If anything, the real overlooked season in my eyes is 2010 - the timing of Kubica's injury was very lucky, as Rosberg had absolutely no right to outscore him in a worse car in 2010, yet little was made of it because we never got the opportunity to see Kubica be exposed again.
>>
Did Kimi's back injury affect him more than expected? His last 3 races in 2013 were utter shit compared to his earlier form, and it lines up well with his lackluster form in 2014 and 2015.

Considering the pay decrease that he took this year, he probably didn't care about it as much as the media thought. The back injury and Grosjean getting every single upgrade from Singapore on (while Raikkonen got nothing) are both far more plausible.

I still think, given a car like the W04, he would have walked the WDC. He was getting back up to speed again, and I truly believe that he was faster than many drivers on the grid. He was dragging his feet a bit, and then he was kicked out to make way for Lauda/Hamilton.

I guess I just feel sorry for him, yes he took all those records, but it never seemed as if he was ready to ever let go.

Against Nico, he surely would've won. Apart from his own luck and the awful stewards, Brawn's favoritism (despite their earlier partnership) was the only thing stopping Schumacher from doing any better than he did, and with Toto and Lauda taking over, Rosberg would've completely fallen apart the same way he did against Hamilton.

MSC vs HAM is much harder to say. Sure, Lewis was humiliated at Monza in 2011, but the lack of testing still took enough pace out of Michael that the current tier 1 drivers + the 2012-2013 version of Kimi would've beaten him in my view.

It's down to the huge amounts of grip these cars generate. Very rare to see the back step out.

Everyone is so excited about the proposed aero regs of 2017, but wouldn't the addition of even more downforce (particularly from the floor) make the cars even more stable than they already are?

I love how Crofty always tries to defend the current state of F1 and you can practically feel the disagreement from Brundle. Remember when Croft said at Hungary that the v6 turbos were only .300 seconds slower than the V10's?
>>
>>63455169
I think the Croft-Brundle pairing is overall pretty good, aside from the Poopy Senna pandering.

Croft might not be the most knowledgeable, but he certainly brings some excitement to his commentating. Brundle alone is dry and dull, but he keeps Crofty in check with his wealth of experience.

I don't think there's a better pairing on air today. BBC is shit, American coverage is worse.
>>
>>6a3454724

Yes, but aren't you bound to get better racing if the overall grip levels are lower in general? If the total grip is lower, it becomes harder to control the power.

As for aero dependence, Gordon Murray made an interesting comment a few years ago about how people love to see racing in the wet, when mechanical grip is at its lowest and the cars are mostly dependent on aero for grip.

He then said the move to increase mechanical grip simply serves as going in exactly the opposite direction to this, by making sure the cars are more planted.

Granted, as a car designer he's a bit biased towards aero, as it gives more performance, but an interesting view on the topic.

Croft is like the normie who's likeable but will often say some minorly incorrect things just so he can say something.

>I don't think there's a better pairing on air today.
Ben Edwards and David Coulthard on the BBC

Sky is just pure shit.
Crofty is a darts commentator who should have stayed in darts.
Brundle has become so flat and bored and clearly only moved to Sky for the money.
Ted manages to have less F1 knowledge than a grapefruit.
Hill and Herbert are the flowerpot men(a decent comic relief duo I'll give you that).
Lazenby has all the charisma of a man shagging a dead horse.

The only decent ones are Rachel Brooks and Pinkham and that is because they look good (pregnant Natalie was GOAT)
They have overcommitted with a crap channel which has barely anything on it half the time and they have realised it and so are scaling it back.
They are already starting soon by taking the channel off air over the winter so they can have a Sky Sports Darts channel.
Their viewing figures are terrible and F1 is not drawing enough subscribers for them to cover the ridiculous amount they paid for the Premier League rights.

Even worse is how they over hype their shit specials.

We had the weekend before where throughout the whole weekend they bigged up about Brundle driving the W06 and how it was the big 40. The 40th GP car he had driven. Every ad break they mentioned it. Every single time they played a clip of it.

They built it up as some sort of amazing thing and then it lasted all of 5 fucking minutes and it wasn't really anything special.

The BBC on the other hand never hypes their VTs to ridiculous levels and produces these long 10 minutes ones which are always high quality.

If Allen were to return to TV, I'd be soooooo happy. Well, atleast if he could return to his pre-hamilton state.
I was watching old races (2001-2006) and realized how much of a Raikkonen bias he had then. Then once Hamilton enters and Raikkonen reaches the finish in Brazil, James sounds like he dosn't give a shit. But even with his Hamilton bias, he was far better any BBC or SKY announcer. I'd say that Allen/Brundle was the best pairing in the world, but as soon as BBC/SKY entered, they were supassed by RAI, Canal+, MTV3 and now also NBC.

Used to have a british co-worker who would record the races and we would watch it at work. Then I moved. Really miss being able to watch and banter with him. Saw him a couple of months ago and had to give him a sympathy pat on the shoulder as hes a huge alonso fan and absolutely hates vettel.

>Look at BrawnGP, started with a major lead on every other team and then lost it mid-season

That's because they had no money to develop through the season.

On the other hand, look at how Red Bull managed to continue to dominate, because they had mastered the blown diffuser.
>>
>>63465991
red bull's dominance was in name only. the only time during the four years of title winning they actually dominated the field was the second half of 2013 and the first and last thirds of 2011 and even then it was nowhere close to the current merc dominance.
>>
>>63466465
Regardless of semantics, it's hard to deny that the Red Bull had a margin (though smaller than Merc) over the rest of the field in all 4 years.

2010 was close because their drivers made errors and lost quite a few points. 2011 was a whitewash, 2013 was also pretty clear cut when the tyre lottery was fixed.

2012 was arguably the only 'competitive' season, and that also had a streak of 4 consecutive Vettel wins, and Alonso profiting from reliability issues

While I personally don't like DRS, I've always envisioned it evolving into a more tactical choice. Teams would have a set amount of time over the course of a lap / 5 laps / race to activate DRS. They could activate DRS whenever and wherever they wanted, but must think tactically about how often they use it.

Don't bully based Brundle. He has several F1 records:

Third most races without a win.
Most races before first podium.
Most races without a pole position.
Most races without leading.

He lost the Formula Three championship to GOAT Senna on the final laps of the last race.
He was a champion material but always had a shit car.
