ITT we post words that we learn or are reminded of, along with the context (article, convo, show, song, podcast, etc.) and definition. Must be organic, i.e., don't start looking through a thesaurus or using apps. We all learn something and get to know each other based on what we read/watch/listen to!

Bonus points if you use images to reinforce.

I will start. I thought that "apocryphal" meant mysterious or cryptic. Or describing an archetype.
And then someone was talking about the "apocryphal statements on Fox News being accepted as truth by a 2.5mm primetime viewing audience", and I thought hm... I need to Google that definition.

Two of my favorites:
Prurient - of, or given to an obsession with sexual matters.
Defenestration - to throw someone or something out of a window.

Your trolling is specious. Don't you think that if I were a homosexual male that I'd be content to look at all the dick rate threads and wouldn't bother trying to connect with people who love words?

I'm so fatigued by monosyllabic adjectives like "sad", "great", and "bad" and hyperbolic adjectives like "amazing", and "incredible".

It's a fun challenge- might be more fun than trolling! Give it a try!
>>
>>25615546
The (second) defenestration of Prague predates the eu by 350ish years tho?

Words are alright I guess. Using old latinate or Greek ones to seem smart is usually dumb tho. 4chan has plenty of memes for you to linguistically assess f you're actually interested in language

Is this a thinly-veiled "show off your pens and inks" thread?

Because I'm way down.

That's an unbranded glass pen, and a pilot custom 823. The inks are J Herbin Blue Provanche & 1670 Anniversary Carob, along with a Noodler Rome Burning on Rhodia unruled.

You are right - I was using EU as an abbreviation because I was too lazy to type out "European"
I concur that using words to appear intelligent is arrogant and generally counterproductive. My intent in initiating the thread was to be /soc/ial by having people share vocabulary discoveries and therefore, we'd learn more about each others' interests / lives.

>>25615796
Was not the intent. I use cheap pens and pencils. But your words, pic and writing utensils please my eyeballs and bring me joy. :) Thank you!
In a recursive way, I'd have to say that I've learned the meaning of "desiderium" on 4chan. Kinda makes my heart ache, though since I am afflicted with desiderium for someone I met through /soc/.

Appreciated. :) Oxford unabridged does a more thorough job than the Googs.

I actually learned that one from Milan Kundera. And I am pretty sure it's because The Unbearable Lightness of Being got made into a movie in, like, 1998, that that word became popular.

Here's some rose-scented ink. It's incredibly cool. It is a very-likeable hobby to get into. Do you like words? Get into the hobby of writing them as, by itself, a work of art. It's fucking rad.

Know what? Gimme your contact info. I'll get you started. Because more people should have this hobby and I'm bored.

Added to my "to read" list, although my backlog is distressing. :\ Going on vacation next month, so I'm looking forward to plowing through some books.

What makes you think I don't aesthetically script out words that I encounter and look up? ;) It's the only way I have a chance of remembering them. Plus, it's relaxes me. I have a notebook where I hoard word discoveries like the tiny treasures they are...

When did you get into this niche hobby?

>Just helping those that are curious about older definitions

Oh yeah, I gotcha! Anachronisms can be fun.

A little tangential, but the word "fulminating" came up in a medical context yesterday related to my friend's dire "fulminating pneumonitis". I had always known that word relative to what rebelling crowds do and had no idea that it was used differently in the medical community to describe diseases that take precipitous changes.

I just think it would be fun and worthwhile to archive historical texts
so that they could be preserved and and recreated
obviously it would be prudent to start with the older and most damaged texts

obviously though it would be expensive and would require
at least three cameras, and an oversized optical sensor in the same rig
Infra-red, Visible light, Ultra-violet, x-ray
unfortunately to do the job right would be a destructive process
literally disassembling the book and processing each page separately

A second Dream I would love to see realized would be a publishing company
based on the concept of a quantum digital archive

Slang originating from Midlands UK

"Peak" a short snappy anecdote to regard how unfortunate an event or situation is

"I've misplaced my lighter"
"Peak"

"Yegs" (pic related)
A derogatory term given to the crumbly small bitty leftovers from an ounce of cannabis

"Cats"
A highly derogatory term given to fiends or wannabe roadmen, the term "kitten" stems from this and is given to young "cats"

Hope I've enlightened you all and have not misunderstood the point of this thread
>>
>>25616796
Fascinating. What got you interested in archival photography? Prior work at a museum of sorts or just love of historical preservation?

Heeey, thanks! So many words that mean different things around the world in English speaking territories! I probably won't remember words like this unless I see/hear it in context with conversation or in my media diet, but can appreciate. :)

My pal's childhood hometown, Houston TX is flooded like nobody's business.

And from a tweet: "Reminder from Capitalism: If you are starving, but no employee is around to accept payment, all food MUST remain floating in fetid water."

I thought fetid meant putrescent, rotting, but wanted to look it up since that didn't seem right. Glad I did. Something putrescent is likely fetid, but the converse does not have to be true.

quixotic: it means like overly idealistic and prone to stoicism. i learned it from all quiet on the western front.

anagogical: it means something mundane which is subconsciously connected with and inspires strong feelings of love. i heard it in a song
>>
>>25618395
What was your opinion of "All Quiet on the Western Front"? Have not read it nor the classic, "Don Quixote", from which quixotic is derived. There was a book review on "Don Quixote" which introduced the word "ken" to me - meaning one's range of knowledge or sight.

Which song uses "anagogical"?

Listening to an interview with Heather McGhee post-Charlottesville. She's talking about how the expectation WAS that the middle class would repudiate the white supremacist notions promoted by the Trump campaign.

http://www.demos.org/heather-c-mcghee

I feel dumb posting all these words - I swear I have at least a high school education and can understand most of these words in context, but I keep looking them up because I want the facility to be able to use them easily in my writing and conversation.

Jiggery pokery

I'm gonna try to remember another word I really like but can't remember at the moment
>>
>>25621551
Thanks! But where did you learn the phrase? The point of this thread is to get to know each other through daily discoveries of words by the conversations we have, stuff that we read, watch, listen to, etc. Much more fun than flipping through a dictionary or Word a Day app. :)
>>
>>25621496
I believe it was more common in the north of england, possibly in scots etc. The most common usage would be in a stock phrase like '(not) beyond the ken of man.' it's also the root of 'canny' which again is more widely used only as uncanny. Not to be confused with cannae. Not to be confused with Hannibal's battle.

But idk no reason why it wouldn't have been used in the appalachians or wherever. In theory. Maybe.

More broadly tho I mean German for know is kennen or kenne or kenner or what have you. French connaitre. Latin cognoscere. Possibly even Russian ~znaio? Probs protoindoeuro in anycase

Learned this while reading a book review on "Who Is Rich?":

"It’s a tempting setting for an affair, an even more tempting setting for a novel, and a perfect setting for a novel about how one shapes the story of one’s own affair. The milieu gets dryly funnier as Klam piles up the details..."

I passed on reading the book. Seems depressing.
