her honesty is key here. if she has genuine interest in astronomy your idea sounds like a surefire hit. if she's the "I liek duh starz" type she'll be bored fast.

Ya, I thought of all the necessities. Blankets galore (no tent as that would sort of defeat the purpose of seeing a meteorshower), wine, food, thermos filled with scalding hot tea, umbrella and a flashlight in case the nightsky won't cut it.

It is just that my mind is my worst enemy and things that sounded good at first start sounding like terrible ideas after they have been parsed through my brain 200 times and I have come up with the gazillion different ways things could go wrong so I need an outsiders opinion at times.

When I was in college, I had a friend do something similar and it worked out splendidly for him.

Tips: in addition to bringing all the stuff you mentioned, bring an extra jacket to give her if she gets cold; have a backup plan if the weather is against you (i.e. a restaurant or some activity), and be prepared to talk about whatever

The "backup" is what has me stumped most.
If it is extremely overcast or even raining by the time we arrive it will be a case of trying to laught it off as I turn around and drive her back home, since there is absolutely fucking nothing to do past 22:00 where we love, let alone past midnight which is when we'll be going.

Ya, I highly doubt there is an actual girlfriend she met up with. It was just her being nice coming up with an excuse rather than saying "I don't fancy spending the night outdoors with you". It is either that or her dad (who has more control over her than he should considering her age) decided to get in the way and she didn't want to admit to that.
