Perceptions of expressions vary from place to place and from culture to culture. In the midwestern United States, I have noticed that a lot of people will smile at strangers on the street, although this is less the case in big cities. If you're in, say, Japan, people do not normally smile at strangers unless they are working in the service industry, and if you smile at randos, people will either think you're weird or an idiot, unless you're a white person, in which case, it's still weird and looks stupid, but is more forgiven. But either way, if you smile all the time and it doesn't look genuine, people will be creeped out. You have to have a smile that looks subtle and genuine, but not forced, which is very difficult to do if you are uh...forcing it. I'd say forget it. Smile when you want to smile, and you should only smile by default if you are the kind of person who would do so without thinking.
